Sambucus nigra L. is a deciduous bush or tree growing up to 10 m (33 ft) with ivory white flowers and shiny blue-black berries. Elderberry preparations are consumed and known for their positive health effects in regard to common cold or influenza. The interest in elderberry preparations has increased constantly during the last years. The ripe berries contain different active ingredients and phytochemicals including anthocyanins (with cyanidin 3-glucoside and cyanidin 3-sambubiosid constituting the highest among them), flavonoids and (poly)phenolic acids.

The immune system consists of various cells, organs and cell signaling molecules and is a highly complex system in the human body. eldosamb® reduces the virus load of MVA (Modified vaccinia virus Ankara; often used as a surrogate for other enveloped viruses). This implies that elderberry extract applied in a lozenge, chewing gum or the like may reduce a virus load on the mouth and throat mucosa, which are considered the first entry gate into the body for an infection.
MVA virucidal activity
Virucidal activity of elderberry extract against MVA. MVA was incubated with elderberry extract (0.24% and 1.2%) for 1 min and for 10 min before serial titration and incubation of target cells. The decrease of infectious titre (TCID50) is indicated as percent decrease compared to the control (virus alone; not incubated with elderberry extract).
