- Product Highlights
Backed by over a dozen published studies, with several specifically focused on canine health and safety benefits, EpiCor® Pets postbiotic has natural* antioxidant power to support a dog’s immune defenses and gut health to help dogs live healthier lives.
EpiCor Pets postbiotic product is composed of hundreds of metabolites made through a highly-controlled natural fermentation process utilizing Saccharomyces cerevisiae yeast. When you think of the gut microbiome, probiotics such as yeast are like factories that use fuels like fibers, or prebiotics, during a fermentation process to make beneficial metabolites in the gut. With EpiCor Pets postbiotic, you can fast-track this process and consistently deliver those metabolites - and all the whole body health benefits they offer—directly to the gut!

Technical Details & Test Data
- Acceptability
A study was conducted in 2021 to assess the acceptability of EpiCor® Pets trout-flavored supplement chews with dogs. Twenty male and female Beagles with an average body weight of 25lbs (11.24kg) were used in this two-day study. Each day, dogs were individually offered two EpiCor Pets trout chews placed in stainless steel bowls and had 5 minutes to eat the chew. Two hours before the test chews were offered, all dogs were presented with 490g of a complete and balanced dry dog food for 30 minutes. This methodology was employed to simulate an in-home supplemented complete and balanced daily feeding regimen.
Figure 1. Average daily EpiCor® Pets Trout Chews offered and consumed
Figure 2. Average Food Intake (n=20)
Results of this study showed 100% acceptability on both days, suggesting that EpiCor Pets will support successful consumption of the targeted daily dose when offered as a supplement in conjunction with a typical daily feeding regimen.
- Immune Benefits
A study was conducted over 8 weeks on thirty adult beagle dogs (18 female and 12 male) that were randomly assigned to one of three supplementation treatments: placebo, 7mg/kg BW and 29mg/kg BW of EpiCor® Pets.
The objective of this study was to evaluate the effects of daily oral supplementation of EpiCor® Pets postbiotic on immune function in dogs and to verify its safety when fed at the target and a 4-fold target use rate.
Capsules contained either EpiCor® Pets or placebo, and were orally administered daily to each dog in the morning throughout the study and researchers were blinded to the treatments. A complete clinical health examination was performed weekly and blood samples collected every two weeks to monitor overall health in addition to measuring markers of in vitro T-cell function and specific antibody responses (IgA and IgE). Saliva samples were also collected biweekly and analyzed for IgA.
This study showed EpiCor® Pets postbiotic to be safe at use rates well-exceeding (4-fold) the recommended target in adult dogs. Furthermore, treatment induced changes in cytokines and immunoglobulins provide evidence that EpiCor® Pets interacts to balance the T-cell helper responses which may be beneficial in dogs responding to common environmental challenges.
- Microbiome Benefits
Nine female hound-mix dogs (Avg BW = 25 kg) were used in a replicated 3x3 Latin square design to evaluate microbiological and immune responses. Dogs were given 400g of food daily with one of 3 gelatine capsule treatments: placebo (empty capsule), 0.143 g (5.7 mg/kg BW) of EpiCor Pets, and 1 g (40 mg/kg) of an alternative S. cerevisiae fermentation product. Blood concentrations of lymphocytes positive for CD3, CD4, CD8a, and CD21 cell surface markers and serum immunoglobulin concentrations were measured.
Gene expression of cytokines TNF-α, Il-6, IFN-α and TGF-B also was determined by quantitative real-time PCR.Lactobacilli, Bifidobacterium, Escherichia coli and Clostridium perfringens populations were quantified in feces using qRTPCR. Population changes within the predominant fecal microflora were evaluated using parallel DGGE.
In conclusion the study demonstrated that EpiCor Pets had a beneficial effect on microbial ecology by reducing Clostridium perfringens populations.
