Cirrasol™ PE113

1 of 11 products in this brand
Cirrasol™ PE113 is a PET/PEG copolymer that forms a protective barrier on polyester and polyester-rich fabric blends. This barrier enhances the release of oil during washing and prevents soil redeposition, resulting in more effective and efficient cleaning. As a result, clothes retain their brightness for a longer period. Additionally, Cirrasol™ PE113 improves fabric absorbency, promoting better breathability, and reduces static cling, enhancing overall comfort during use.

A cleaning boost

Blends of polyester and natural fibers are becoming more and more commonplace. However, the challenge has been to identify a soil release, anti-redeposition technology that functions at cost effective levels in standard detergent systems. That has all changed with the introduction of Cirrasol PE113.

Cirrasol PEI 13 combines a soil-releasing action with a soil barrier function which protects fabrics throughout the wash cycle. With Cirrasol PEI 13 polyester and polyester rich fabrics maintain their original bright colors, extending the life of garments beyond the norm.

Comfort in wear

Fabrics treated with Cirrasol PEI 13 have improved water absorption owing to their more hydrophilic nature. This provides a number of additional benefits to the wearer including reduced static cling and improved breathability.

Breathability

Cirrasol PEI 13 helps moisture pass through polyester rich garments, improving their 'breathability' owing to its hydrophilic nature.

Anti-static

The increase in the hydrophilic nature of the fabric and absorbency obtained with Cirrasol PEI 13 goes hand in hand with reduced static charge build up. Therefore static cling, often with polyester and polyester rich garments, is reduced.

Benefits

Cirrasol PE113 has been designed with modern garments and washing in mind. Synthetic fibers such as polyester and poly cotton blends bring fashion to the mass market at affordable prices. However, affordability has not diminished consumer need for long lasting comfort in-wear and garment life. Cirrasol PE113 changes the hydrophobicity of polycotton and polyester fibers improving the moisture absorbency of a garment. This allows for moisture transfer in-wear and in-wash making garments easier to clean and with greater comfort for the wearer. The antiredposition and anti-soiling benefits of Cirrasol PE113 provide a highly effective system for ensuring polyester and polyester rich fabrics maintain brightness and cleanliness wash after wash. Not only this, Cirrasol PE113 limits graying of white polyester fibers compared to a control keeping fabrics looking newer for longer!

Key Features

Cirrasol PE113 is based on similar chemistry to Permalose TM and therefore offers much the same performance advantages. Cirrasol PE113 is provided as a solid product, allowing customers to reduce transport costs through in-house dilution.

Applications & Uses

Applications
  • Liquid laundry detergents & fabric cleaners
  • Powder & tablet laundry detergents
  • cleaning
  • Polyester detergent

Ease of formulation

Cirrasol PEI 13 is non-ionic and therefore wholly compatible with anionic detergent systems using traditional products such as linear alkyl benzene sulphonates.
Cirrasol PEI 13 has a melting point of approx. 45 oc which greatly enhances its handling characteristics. If Cirrasol PEI 13 is heated to 60 - 70 oc, it can be simply formulated into laundry liquid formulations with no special mixing requirements.

Formulation stability

When used in aqueous laundry detergents, Cirrasol PEI 13 shows a marked improvement in formulation stability over traditional soil release polymers. Conventional products, which are solids or dispersions of solids, often produce cloudy, unstable products.

Recommended inclusion levels
Ultimately usage levels will be determined by the desired application effects. Relatively small additions will boost the anti-soil redegnsition. Higher levels of use will result in greater improvements in absorbency and reduced static. We would therefore recommend additions of 0.5 - 2.0% in the final formulation.

Technical Details & Test Data

Soil release

Tests demonstrate that Cirrasol PEI 13 is highly effective at aiding the removal of oily stains from fabrics, a particular challenge in polyester textiles. This means clothing effortlessly cleaned without excessive additional washing and garments therefore look better for longer.

Anti-soil redeposition

Work carried out independently by the wFk Cleaning Technology Research Institute demonstrates the anti-soil redeposition performance of Cirrasol PEI 13. When added to a standard detergent system in controlled washing tests replicating consumer conditions, Cirrasol PEI 13 helps retain the original whiteness of polyester garments

polyester garments washed in the presence of soil stay whiter for longer.
Cirrasol PEI 13 (0.5%) was added to standard laundry detergent (table 1) and standard loads (EN 60 456) washed repeatedly using a Siemens domestic washing machine (WXLS 1430) at 60 oc (cotton program without pre-wash) in the presence of a soiled ballast. The degree of soil deposited on the white fabrics was measured by the change in graying after each wash.
The greatest benefits are seen in pure polyester garments where 69% less graying was observed over 25 wash cycles. Good performance is also seen on polyester-cotton mix fabrics where 56% less graying was observed over 25 wash cycles.

How does Cirrasol PEI 13 work?

Polyester-based fabric is difficult to clean, in part due to the (k)philic/hydrophobic nature of the polyester textile which makes the material difficult to wet with aqueous laundering materials. Cirrasol PEI 13 works by altering the surface properties of the polyester fiber to promote a more hydrophilic effect. By increasing the hydrophilicity of the polyester fiber oily soils can be more easily.
In addition because the fabric more and therefore less attractive to oil (figure 4) garments are protected against soil (a major cause of polyester graying).
In the photomicrograph shown below, the 'roll up' mechanism allowing easier soil removal can clearly seen.

Test Data

In tests polyester fabric was washed with a laundry detergent formulation containing Cirrasol PE113 (0.5%) then dried. Absorbency was assessed by measuring the water absorbed by test fabrics by capillary action.
