Product Highlights

Cirrasol PP842 is a highly durable hydrophilic fiber finish, particularly well suited for polyolefin nonwovens. In applications where rapid and repeated transfer of water or other aqueous liquids through the fabric is needed, Cirrasol PP842 acts as an efficient wicking agent, ensuring maximum comfort for the user.

When applied to coverstock fabric for diapers, incontinence and feminine hygiene products, Cirrasol PP842 promotes rapid strike through of liquids into the absorbent layer below, so helping to protect the skin by limiting liquid contact. A major advance of Cirrasol PP842 is to maintain this performance throughout repeated insults, giving parents and energetic users the confidence and security they need.

Performance benefits
  • Quickly draws away liquid, helping keep skin drier for longer
  • Long lasting - Durable to repeated wetting
  • Proven mildness on the skin
  • Promotes good fiber-fiber cohesion and fiber-metal friction control
  • Fair control over electrostatic charge generation
  • Does not compromise the thermal bonding process for carded nonwovens
  • Easy to handle and apply
Product Performance

Faster strike through performance

Tests have shown the superior wicking performance of Cirrasol PP842 (figure 1). Both the immediate strikethrough time and the long term performance after repeat applications far exceed that of Cirrasol G-2109 (polyoxyethylene (9) lauric acid), a non-durable fiber finish traditionally used in polypropylene coverstock applications.

Skin caring

In sensitive applications such as diapers, feminine hygiene and incontinence products, it is essential that any ingredients are gentle on the skin. The components of Cirrasol PP482A were therefore selected from ingredients used in cosmetics and food contact applications. A number of tests were also carried out on Cirrasol PP842 verifying its suitability for use in applications where it comes into contact with the skin.

Mildness

The mildness of Cirrasol PP842 has been proven by extensive skin irritation studies.

In separate studies, 50 – 196 volunteers were treated with the neat (100% active) components of Cirrasol PP842 for 72 hours and then again, for up to 72 hours, after a recovery period of 7 – 14 days. There were no reactions noted in any subjects, to any of the ingredients, after the first or second patch test application demonstrating that the components are neither primary irritants nor sensitisers to human skin.

Reviews by the Journal of the American College of Toxicology also conclude that all ingredients are safe for use in cosmetics.

Cytotoxicity

Cirrasol PP842 treated fabric was independently evaluated for potential cytotoxicity, against a positive and negative control and a popular non-durable fiber finish. Even the undiluted test solution resulted in minimal cell damage, and at 50% dilution no cell damage was observed (figure 2). The cytotoxicity results therefore indicate that Cirrasol PP842 poses no concerns regarding skin contact, and is ideal for use as a wicking agent for coverstock and similar skin contact applications.

In each test, healthy tissue cell culture plates were treated with the appropriate eluted test solution (prepared from 5 ml culture medium per gram of test fabric) and the affect on the cells assessed in a controlled environment.

Product Background

Cirrasol PP842 offers the opportunity for incorporation of a range of natural botanical extracts. Plant extracts are prevalent in personal care, driven by their popularity with consumers, and are now also being seen across many other categories. Botanical extracts give a skin-friendly, natural appeal to diapers, feminine hygiene and incontinence products.

Cirrasol PP842 can be supplied with a range of botanical extracts including Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) popular for its skin moisturizing and calming properties, Marigold calendula (Calendula officinalis) recognized for its soothing, antiseptic properties, Camomile (Matricaria chamomilla) with its well documented anti-irritancy properties and Green tea (Camellia sinensis) well known for its highly active polyphenol content giving anti-oxidant and deodorizing benefits.

Fibre Finish

Cirrasol PP842A can help finally bridge the gap between synthetic and natural grass. This durable hydrophilic finish improves water drainage through the hydrophobic fiber and reduces skin/fiber friction to provide a surface more comparable to real grass than ever before.

Man-made fibers are often incorporated into the concrete mix to reduce cracks, increase impact resistance or improve shatter resistance. Durable hydrophilic finishes such as Cirrasol PP842A, Cirrasol PP815 or Permalose TM help optimize the fiber dispersion in the aqueous mix.  The durability of the finish ensures it is retained on the fiber during the mixing process.

Applications & Uses

Use Level
0.2-0.5%
Recommended Application

Valuable for any applications where rapid and repeated transfer of water or other liquids through nonwoven fabric is needed, including coverstock for:

  • Diapers
  • Incontinence products
  • Sanitary napkins

Cirrasol PP842 can be topically applied at several different points in the production and value chain. Cirrasol PP842 can be applied directly onto spun-laid nonwoven, or to staple fibers for carding or airlaid processing and subsequent conversion into nonwoven fabric.

Formulations Guidelines

Our botanical extracts are available in hydrophilic and lipophilic media so are suitable for most applications. These extracts can be easily formulated with Cirrasol PP842A by Croda to supply you with a single formulation to address all the major issues of modern hygiene products.

Details of Use
Composition

Proprietary formulation comprising non-ionic lubricants, anti-static agents and wetting agents.

Use

As a spin finish for the treatment of polypropylene fibers and nonwoven fabrics for use in cover stock and other similar hygiene applications.

Application

Cirrasol PP 842 can be applied from any dilution rate in water up to 25%, depending on the method and equipment used. Recommended application rates are in the range of 0.2% - 0.5% active product on the weight of dry fiber.

Dilution

Dilutions of Cirrasol PP 842 can be made by adding the required amount of product to water at 20°C - 40°C with stirring. Agitation is continued until a fine homogenous emulsion is produced. Emulsions should be either kept below 45°C to maintain stability, or if higher temperatures are used kept under continuous agitation.

Storage

Cirrasol PP 842 can be stored for up to 12 months in unopened drums. It is recommended to store the material under cover between 10°C and 30°C. If the material becomes frozen, then it is recommended to warm the product to between 30°C and 40°C, and stir before use.
