Fibre care

Fiber protection and repair are relatively new claims for carpet and upholstery care. Croda's Coltide Naturals range of hydrolysed and functionalised proteins have been proven to provide effective conditioning of natural fibers such as cotton, linen and silk thereby reducing fiber erosion and degradation. The Coltide Naturals range are moisture retentive, with the low molecular weight variants enabling penetration of fibers to reduce brittleness. Coltides are stable over a wide pH range and are compatible with anionic, nonionic and amphoteric surfactants. Coltide Naturals offer excellent label claims and marketing potential

Summary

Hydrolysed proteins from natural sources used as skin smoothing and conditioning agents.

Product Background

Add a natural touch to your fabric care product. The Coltide Naturals range of natural protein additives has been specifically designed for enhanced conditioning of natural textiles, including cotton, linen and silk.

Coltide Naturals are a range of short-chain peptides and hygroscopic amino acids which act as effective moisturizers. Our protein range includes silk, cotton, cashmere and wheat derivatives which offer opportunities for fabricspecific brand extensions. Coltide Cotton, for example, is a hydrolysed cotton derivative that attracts moisture to fibers due to its hydrophilic groups. Coltide Cotton is also naturally substantive and would improve the condition and feel of cotton and linen fabrics. As novel conditioning agents based on naturally occurring sources, Coltide Naturals offer excellent label claims and marketing potential for niche categories such as speciality fabric softeners.

Cotton Fresh

Coltide Cotton is a hydrolysed cotton derivative. As a higher molecular weight hydrolysate, Coltide Cotton acts as an effective moisturizer due to its hydrophilic groups which attract moisture to fibers. Coltide Cotton is also naturally substantive and would improve the condition and feel of cotton and linen fabrics. As a novel conditioning agent based on cotton, this product offers excellent marketing potential for niche categories such as speciality fabric softeners.

Formulation guidelines

Coltide peptides form clear solutions at all concentrations when diluted with water and are easily formulated. They are compatible with all common surfactants. They are stable between pH 4 and pH 10 and will withstand heating up to a temperature of 80ºC. Recommended inclusion levels are 0.1 - 0.5% active or 2-5 g/m2 depending on the desired effect.

Applications

Coltides are ideal for inclusion in fabric care products. However, their primary application is in fabric softeners and detergents. Optimum performance can be achieved with levels as low as 1% as supplied.

  • Fabric conditioners/softeners
  • Laundry detergents - suitable for liquids, powders and tablets
  • Fine and delicate wash concentrates
  • Woolens treatments

Substantivity and moisture retention

Coltide Naturals are highly substantive materials which are readily adsorbed onto and absorbed into negatively charged substrates such as cotton, cashmere, silk etc. They are substantive not only from aqueous solutions but also from conditioners and detergents. The excellent moisture retention properties of the substantive amino acids in Coltide Naturals impart a deep conditioning effect to fabrics, improving the softness and handling characteristics.

Liquid soaps
In addition to household use, liquid hand soaps can be used in washrcoms when dispensers make them nue hygienic and less wasteful than soap bars. Crodasinic LS30 (sodium lauroyl sarcosinate), a mild anionic surfactant with counter irritancy properties, is recommerded to reduce the irritation of commodity anionic surfactants. Skin conditioners and 'misturisers, Coltide can be used to increase the skin care properties of such systems Solan EIE50 in particular are gentle cleansing agents which do not defat the skin and have been shown to the harsh defatting effects of detergent/solvent cleaning systems without impairing foaming

Efficacy Studies
Trans-epidermal water loss

A study of the ability of Coltide Cotton to reduce the irritating effects of SLS was conducted to demonstrate Coltide Cotton’s mildness and counter-irritant benefits. 10 responsive volunteers were treated with a 5% active SLS hydroxylethocellulose gel, and the same SLS gel with inclusion of 1% active Coltide Cotton in Finn Chambers® for five hours. Measurement of trans-epidermal water loss (TEWL) at the treatment sites was conducted one hour after chamber removal, to allow excess water evaporation and general acclimatization. The results of untreated sites were used to correct for the method of sample application (Finn Chambers®).

Comparison of the changes in skin properties allowed evaluation of the benefits of Coltide Cotton. As depicted in figure 1, inclusion of 1% active Coltide Cotton into the detergent system was shown to reduce SLS provoked skin irritation by 36%.

A trend towards long term benefits was also noted. Assessment, 22 hours after the treatment period, revealed that even after this prolonged recovery time 5% active SLS treated sites display persistent irritation as measured by TEWL (106%). In the case of sites also treated with 1% Coltide Cotton, the level of irritation after 22 hours was minimal (28%), as illustrated in figure 1.

Erythema

In this study Coltide Cotton was assessed in vivo for counter-irritancy in an aqueous 5% active SLS detergent solution. Formulae, with and without the inclusion of Coltide Cotton were applied to the forearm of eight SLSresponsive volunteers using occlusive plasters for four hours. After a further hour, to allow water evaporation and general acclimatization, the development of erythema was assessed using a Minolta Chromameter®. This measures the a* chroma of light reflected from the treated site, giving a numerical value of the extent of red (versus green) colouration. The results of untreated sites were used to correct for the method of sample application (plasters).

Monitoring of the skin properties prior to and after treatment allowed the evaluation of the skin caring benefits of Coltide Cotton. As depicted in figure 2, inclusion of 1% active Coltide Cotton to the SLS detergent was shown to reduce skin irritation by 61%.

Moisturisation

Like cotton fabric, a key functional effect of hydrolysed proteins is their ability to bind moisture. Lower molecular weight hydrolysed proteins such as Coltide Cotton, demonstrate high efficacy due to the high number of ‘exposed’ hydrophilic carboxyl and amino groups. Low molecular weight, hydrolysed proteins are also able penetrate the stratum corneum, thus providing nourishment and hydrating the skin from within.i The skin becomes softer and smoother, more plump and has improved elasticity. In detergent systems, as well as being able to actively moisturize the skin, protein hydrolysates reduce moisture loss by reducing skin barrier damage

Sustainability Criteria

Majority bio-based (95-50%)

Safety & Health

Health and Safety

Coltide peptides are considered to be acceptable cosmetic raw materials, presenting no special hazards. They are essentially non-irritating to skin and eyes and non-toxic
