Natural protein conditioning agents
Add a natural touch to your fabric care product. The Coltide Naturals range of natural protein additives has been specifically designed for enhanced conditioning of natural textiles, including cotton, linen and silk.
Coltide Naturals are a range of short-chain peptides and hygroscopic amino acids which act as effective moisturizers. Our protein range includes silk, cotton, cashmere and wheat derivatives which offer opportunities for fabricspecific brand extensions. Coltide Cotton, for example, is a hydrolysed cotton derivative that attracts moisture to fibers due to its hydrophilic groups. Coltide Cotton is also naturally substantive and would improve the condition and feel of cotton and linen fabrics. As novel conditioning agents based on naturally occurring sources, Coltide Naturals offer excellent label claims and marketing potential for niche categories such as speciality fabric softeners.

- Applications
Coltides are ideal for inclusion in fabric care products. However, their primary application is in fabric softeners and detergents. Optimum performance can be achieved with levels as low as 1% as supplied.
- Fabric conditioners/softeners
- Laundry detergents - suitable for liquids, powders and tablets
- Fine and delicate wash concentrates
- Woolens treatments
Substantivity and moisture retention
Coltide Naturals are highly substantive materials which are readily adsorbed onto and absorbed into negatively charged substrates such as cotton, cashmere, silk etc. They are substantive not only from aqueous solutions but also from conditioners and detergents. The excellent moisture retention properties of the substantive amino acids in Coltide Naturals impart a deep conditioning effect to fabrics, improving the softness and handling characteristics.
Coltide HQS is ideal for inclusion in fabric care products and is especially suited to fabric softeners. Optimum performance can be achieved with a recommended formulation inclusion level of 0.5%.
Liquid soaps
In addition to household use, liquid hand soaps can be used in washrcoms when dispensers make them nue hygienic and less wasteful than soap bars. Crodasinic LS30 (sodium Lauroyl sarcosinate), a mild anionic surfactant with counter irritancy properties, is recommerded to reduce the irritation of commodity anionic surfactants. Skin conditioners and Imisturisers, Coltide can be used to increase the skin care properties of such systems. Solan EIE50 in particular are gentle cleansing agents which do not defat the skin and have been shown to reduce the harsh defatting effects of detergent/solvent cleaning systems without impairing foaming .
- Formulation guidelines
Coltide Naturals form clear solutions at all concentrations when diluted with water and are easily formulated into fabric softeners and detergents. They are compatible with all common anionic and amphoteric detergents and cationic conditioners. They are stable between pH 4 and pH 10 and will withstand heating up to a temperature of 80ºC. Recommended inclusion levels are 0.1 - 0.5% active depending on the desired effect.

Technical Details & Test Data
- Perceptible Conditioning
The handle/feel of fabric is defined as the effect that the consumer can easily perceive and, as such, is very important when marketing fabric conditioners. Coltide HQS improves the lubricity of fibers and imparts texture, softness and body. This unique combination of bodying properties and lubricity is a direct result of having a fatty quaternary group covalently bonded onto a hydrolysed protein backbone.
In subjective handle tests a panel of 20 individuals showed a statistically significant preference for material treated with a conditioner containing Coltide HQS. The independent study evaluated the conditioning properties of Coltide HQS on 100% terry cotton toweling when included in an esterquat-based fabric softener. Standard machine-wash protocol was adopted and the fabrics were put through 20 wash cycles.
- After 10 wash cycles, 65% preferred Coltide HQS
- After 20 wash cycles, 100% preferred Coltide HQS
- Proven Fibre Protection - Wool
After 20 wash cycles, a wool sample treated with conditioner only, Image 2, shows that the cuticle has been stripped off the wool fiber, whereas the sample treated with conditioner plus Coltide HQS, Image 3, shows some cuticle damage, but the majority of the cuticle is still intact.
- Proven Fibre Protection - Cotton
After 10 wash cycles, cotton fibers treated with conditioner only show some fibrillation, whereas the fiber surface of the fabric treated with conditioner plus Coltide HQS is almost as undamaged as the untreated control sample. After 20 wash cycles the conditioner with Coltide HQS sample, Image 6, shows some fibrillation, but overall the amount of fibrillation is markedly less than that found on the conditioner only sample
- DMTA – Wool Results
Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA) was used to measure changes in the lubricity of fibers. This showed that superior lubricity (increased displacement) is achieved by Coltide HQS after only 10 washes
- Fibre strength and lubricity
Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analyser (DMTA) used to measure changes in displacement (lubricity) of fibers
-50ºC to 200ºC at 4ºC/min. Displacement curve - measures any change in the distance between the clamps
- Wettability results
Fabric wettability unimpaired on cotton or wool samples
- Coltide HQS reduces static cling
Anti-static measurements of fabric treated with Coltide HQS added into a fabric conditioner shows a large reduction in the static cling compared to the control
Safety & Health
- Health and Safety
Coltide peptides are considered to be acceptable textile raw materials, presenting no special hazards. They are essentially non-irritating to skin and eyes and non-toxic.
