Polishes (household, shoe and automotive)
Croda's range of synthetic waxes may be used as extenders for natural waxes such as carnauba and candelilla in polish production. The advantages of using synthetic waxes include consistency of quality and ready availability of raw materials. The product ranges consist of wax acids, esters, partially saponified esters based on synthetic wax acids and alcohols, and oxidized hydrocarbon wax. By careful formulation these waxes can enhance the properties of paste and emulsion polishes, contributing to paste hardness, solvent retention, shelf stability as well as gloss and film hardness. Syncrowax BB4, a synthetic beeswax alternative, imparts a traditional beeswax-type finish to wooden furniture. Syncrowax ERLC is an ester wax particularly suitable for emulsion and liquid polishes, giving homogenous
stable products in both anionic and nonionic emulsions. In white spirit it produces colloidal products which do not set on standing; films buff to a high gloss. Syncrowax HGLC is a hard wax for use in paste and emulsionbased
polishes. Due to its high molecular weight Syncrowax HGLC improves paste structure and produces high gloss finishes. Syncrowax HRC is a useful modifying wax with gloss improving properties. Example formulations demonstrating a variety of floor, furniture, shoe and automotive polishes, as well as general formulating guidelines, are available on request.

Leather treatment
Waxes can be used to impart water repellency, alter handle, act as fillers (in emulsion form) and give matt or gloss finishes to leather. Speciality waxes such as the Syncrowax range are buffable, gloss-giving waxes. The Crodamides are fatty acid amides which act as slip additives and handle modifiers in leather finishing formulations. Croda's range of emulsifying agents includes a speciality wax emulsifier blend, Cromul EM0685, designed to emulsify different grades of paraffin and carnauba waxes commonly used in leather finishes. Other paraffin wax emulsifiers include Solan WG30 and the Brij CS range. Crodafos CS2A functions as an excellent emulsifier for anionic fat liquors, and imparts good lubricating properties. It additionally improves leather strength and tear resistance, leaving a surface waxy feel. Further details of the range of Croda products used in leather processing can be found in our brochure 'A guide to leather auxiliaries' (DI009 06/98), available on request.

Textile processing
Waxes and wax emulsifiers are useful in a number of applications in textile processing. In spin finishes and lubricants they are used as processing aids to reduce friction and function as antistatic agents. Their lubricating properties make them useful additives in fiber production, texturing and processing eg in coning, weaving and knitting oils, where they reduce friction and subsequent wear of the fiber or yarn. Further details of the range of Croda products used in textile processing can be found in our brochure 'A guide to textile auxiliaries' (DI008 06/98), available on request.

Metal working
Waxes serve as lubricants, temporary anticorrosives and emulsifiers in a variety of metal working applications. Lanolin and derivatives are useful additives in protective coatings, metal polishes, metal working greases and drawing fluids.
Crodamides are highly effective lubricant additives in power transmission fluids. Crodamide EBS is an excellent lubricant for both wet and dry drawing of steel wire and tubes, and is used to produce sintered metal bearings.

Printing inks
Natural and synthetic waxes are commonly used in a broad range of printing inks, including screen, gravure, lithographic and flexographic inks. In these systems waxes promote rub- and scuff-resistance, improve slip, adhesion, water repellency and reduce blocking. Waxes with surface active properties additionally function as emulsion modifiers and stabilizers, for example in letterpress and lithographic inks. More detailed information on Croda products useful in the manufacture of printing inks can be found in our brochure 'A guide to printing inks and auxiliary markets' (DI003 10/97), available on request.

Paper
The paper industry encompasses a wide range of processes in which waxes and wax emulsifiers are commonly used. Crodamides, fatty acid amides, are used in paper coating dispersions on thermal papers such as fax papers. In particular Crodamide EBS is used in water repellent wax coatings for cardboard and other paper products, and is an important component of defoamers for Kraft sulfate black liquor. Wax emulsifiers such as ethoxylated fatty acids (Myrj) and glyceryl esters (Cithrol GMS) are useful emulsifiers for silicone fluids used as antifoams in certain paper production processes. High HLB emulsifiers (Solan E, Brij CS20) have been used to emulsify fatty acids used in the flotation process for de-inking paper.

Plastics
Waxes such as the Syncrowax range and Crodamides are useful as lubricants for extrusion, blow and injection molding of rigid and plasticised PVC. The Crodamides in particular are recommended as mold release agents for PVC, PS, HDPE, PP, polyester plastics and rubber. Syncrowax ERLC is recommended for use in solvent based dispersions.

Waxes for Industrial Applications

Waxes find many important uses in industry due to their varying physical and chemical properties. Combinations of different waxes and wax emulsifiers with other materials are commonly used to obtain specific effects, such as waterproofing, lubrication, dispersing, emulsification and glossing. Croda manufactures a wide range of natural and synthetic waxes, both non-emulsifying and emulsifying, which can be categorized into the following product groupings
