Features & Benefits

Product Background

The ECO Brij series of ethoxylated fatty alcohols are non-ionic surfactants, based upon a variety of fatty alcohols and different levels of ethoxylation. ECO Brij surfactants are available as part of Croda’s 100% renewable, 100% bio-based ECO Range of surfactants. ECO Brij series offer diverse properties for the formulation of a wide range of household and I&I applications. Chemically, all ECO Brij products conform to the following structure where 'R' represents the fatty alcohol moiety and 'n' represents the number of moles of ethylene oxide.

Features & Benefits
  • 100% Renewable
  • 100% Bio-based
  • Reduces reliance on fossil fuel feedstocks
  • Manufactured with renewable energy

  • Hydrolytically stable
  • Electrolyte tolerant

As ethoxylated alcohols the ECO Brij products are classified as ethers and possess certain behavioral characteristics inherent to these compounds. The presence of an ether linkage in their structure gives them exceptional stability, and the absence of an ester linkage virtually eliminates any tendency for them to hydrolyse. These properties enable them to exhibit tolerance to extreme levels of pH and to tolerate higher levels of electrolytes than ester-type surfactants. The ECO Brij series are therefore particularly recommended for use in extreme pH formulations, such as highly alkaline detergents, cleaners and scouring agents.

The ECO Brij products behave synergistically and can therefore be formulated to greater effect when used in combination. This is particularly evident in the case of difficult to formulate emulsions, such as clear gel microemulsions.

Detergency and cleaning

The selection of surfactants for detergent applications is usually carried out on the basis of chemical structure, e.g. relative sizes of the hydrophobic and hydrophilic groups. Optimum performance can be achieved with an alkyl chain length around C12 – C15 and 4 – 10 moles of ethylene oxide. ECO Brij L grades are particularly recommended for their rapid wetting and detergency. These properties make the ECO Brij series highly useful in a variety of household detergent formulations.

The ECO Brij products are also effective emulsifiers and dispersing agents for many of the solvents used in liquid cleaners and degreasers. ECO Brij O5 and ECO Brij O10 are particularly useful for these applications.

The diverse properties of the ECO Brij series make these products suitable for all other types of cleaners such as liquid and solid detergent formulations, vehicle shampoo and wax cleaners, steel and glass cleaners. They can be utilized alone or in combination with anionic, cationic or other non-ionic surfactants.

HLB and emulsification

When developing an emulsifying system, it is often advantageous to use two or more surfactants. These will consist of one surfactant of relatively low HLB and another of relatively high HLB. A third component of intermediate HLB is sometimes incorporated. The average HLB of the mixture should approximate that required to emulsify the oily or dispersed phased.

ECO Brij products based on cetyl, cetearyl and stearyl alcohol are excellent emulsifiers for inverse emulsions with oil as the continuous phase. ECO Brij products based on oleyl alcohol are more often used for the formulation of microemulsion systems. The HLB of these surfactants, like their solubility, corresponds to the degree of ethoxylation. Table 3 lists the approximate HLB values for the ECO Brij series in ascending order.

Hard surface cleaners

Hard surface cleaners are usually based on acidic or alkaline systems and therefore necessitate a surfactant which is chemically stable at extreme pH. ECO Brij products are often preferred in these cases because of their stability and relatively low foaming properties. They are effective wetting agents and the performance of the cleaner can be optimized by selecting the ECO Brij product that is most suitable for the application.

Certified sustainable palm oil derivatives – mass balance

The ECO Brij series are Croda’s sustainable palm oil variants allowing customers to use sustainably sourced material if they wish. The products are manufactured by the RSPO’s Mass Balance system. The Mass Balance supply chain allows certified sustainable palm oil material and non-certified material to be mixed throughout the supply chain but administratively monitors the mass of certified material produced and sold. The Mass Balance system is fully audited allowing buyers of the material to view the products life span. Another advantage of this system is that it actively encourages palm growers to produce sustainable palm and move towards a segregated supply chain system. By choosing these ingredients, you contribute to the production of sustainable palm oil. Products manufactured with sustainable palm oil do not in any way compromise on performance.

ECO Range

The ECO Brij Range is manufactured using ethylene oxide derived from bio-ethanol, resulting in 100% renewable surfactants with performance identical to petro-based options. These 100% bio-based products eliminate the need to choose between high performance and fully renewable ingredients. By using an alternative route to ethylene oxide with bioethanol from biomass sources, it significantly increases the biobased content of ethoxylated products and reduces reliance on fossil fuels. Additionally, the ECO Brij range is manufactured with high levels of renewable energy. Sustainability informs and guides our development strategies and is an integral part of our business. The ECO Brij Range addresses the consumer demand for more sustainable products and aids our customers in meeting their own sustainability goals, while delivering high performance products to the market

Applications & Uses

Markets
Uses

ECO Brij products are often used with anionic surfactants such as alkyl ether phosphates and sulphated oils. Such mixtures generally produce emulsions with a very fine dispersion and improved stability.

Polishes

ECO Brij products are excellent emulsifiers for wax / solvent combinations and can be used in many types of formulations ranging from aerosol furniture polishes to car wash and wax polishes. ECO Brij CS20, S20 and O20 are particularly effective emulsifiers for many natural and synthetic waxes.

Fibre Care

Compatibility and chemical stability make the ECO Brij series useful formulating aids in laundry liquid and powder detergents and conditioning agents. Utilized in the textile processing industry, the ECO Brij products are effective at all temperatures below cloud point and impart lubricity and antistatic properties to the finish. Textile oils and fiber finish agents can be emulsified by products of the ECO Brij L, O and CS grades

Solubility and solubilisation

As with all ethoxylates, the solubility of the ECO Brij products depends upon their degree of ethoxylation, with water solubility increasing with increasing levels of ethoxylation. Thus, the higher ethoxylates, e.g. ECO Brij™ C20 MBAL is soluble in water and insoluble in mineral oil and other non-polar solvents.

Stability and compatibility

The ECO Brij products exhibit good stability over a wide pH range, giving them the versatility to be used in a variety of oil-in-water systems. They are compatible with other non-ionic surfactants as well as anionic and cationic ingredients.
