Evogen ON 50x is a liquid bacterial blend that uses application-specific bacteria to offer a proven, innovative and effective long-term approach to odour control.
Bad odours are often generated over time due to food spillages, cooking activities or pet accidents. Out of habit, we then use strong air fresheners to mask the bad odour. This might solve the problem for a short while, but these bad odours tend to return and are not easily overpowered.

Evogen probiotics are an ideal way for formulators to meet the growing interest in safe and sustainable cleaning products. The application-specific bacteria in Evogen ON 50x produce enzymes that degrade organic matter in the application area, allowing them to both break down and neutralise existing malodours and prevent malodour formation over time.
A Microplate Reader was used to evaluate the activity of Evogen ON 50x bacillus strains in the presence of different organic soil types. In each well of the plate reader, individual bacillus strains were combined with different organic soils along with a florescent dye. The strength of the fluorescent dye in the sealed wells is proportional to the oxygen saturation. Fluorescence measurements taken over a 24 hour period show decreasing oxygen saturation over time, indicating spore germination and activity as the bacteria metabolise the soil.
Figure 1 shows the rapid germination and activity of Evogen ON 50x probiotics in the presence of milk protein. This test illustrates that Evogen ON 50x activates within hours in the presence of large molecules like protein food soils, breaking them down through the action of extracellular and intracellular enzymes produced by the bacteria. As the enzymes break down the large insoluble molecules, the by-products of the degradation are taken into the bacteria for further metabolism, avoiding the release of malodorous compounds that would typically form as organic soils age. In this way, Evogen ON 50x prevents odour formation at the source, ensuring that soils will not generate malodour in the future.

Volatile fatty acids are malodourous compounds which contribute to odours in and around the home. The data in Figure 2 show the rapid germination and metabolism of Evogen ON 50x in the presence of valeric acid which contributes to body odour. The data highlight the ability of Evogen ON 50x to metabolise existing malodour molecules themselves, in addition to soils that can lead to malodour generation.

Using data from these types of Microplate Reader tests, Evogen ON 50x was formulated to include application specific bacillus strains chosen for their rapid germination and metabolism of a variety of different soil types, allowing the product to both remove existing odours and prevent odour formation at the source.
The ability for Evogen probiotic blends to activate in the presence of soil for up to 4 weeks was analysed in Table 1. An Evogen product was diluted to 1x concentration (50:1) and then applied to a dry paper towel. Next, a ceramic tile test surface was thoroughly cleaned using the dampened paper towel and left at room temperature for up to 4 weeks. Contact plates were used to sample the surface once a week and the plates were incubated at 30oC for 24-48 hours before the colonies were photographed.
It is clear to see in Table 1 that the level of viable and culturable spores on the surface remains constant for 4 weeks after the initial cleaning has taken place. The long-term presence of probiotic spores and their ability to activate long after initial cleaning can help to break down soil that generates odours.
Breaking down odour generating soils with Evogen ON 50x
The ability of Evogen ON 50x and surfactant blends to break down souring milk odours is demonstrated in the human panel tests shown in Figure 3. To assess this breakdown, cotton fabric swatches were added into a series of wide mouth jars and 1ml of fresh whole milk was then applied. The test solution was then applied to the milk spot and also sprayed into the jar. The sealed odour jars were rated based on the smell at each time interval and compared to an untreated control. Odour was rated on a 3 point scale: 0 (no odour), 1 (slight odour), 2 (strong odour) and 3 (very strong).
Figure 3 shows the long term benefit of Evogen ON 50x odour prevention compared to a complexing odour neutraliser (Zinador™ 35L). Initially, panellists rated all swatches 0 (no odour) as no malodour was present. However, in the control conditions (water and Zinador 35L only), malodour increased as the milk soured over time to the maximum rating by day 6. In comparison, the Evogen ON 50x treated samples were consistently rated as no odour for the duration of the test, highlighting the long term odour prevention benefit of Evogen probiotics.
The odour control benefit of Zinador 35L is apparent as the strength of the odour takes longer to develop compared to the control. Reapplication of odour complexing agents such as Zinador 35L can be required on soils which continue to generate odours over time. Products can be formulated with Zinador 35L and Evogen GP 50x to utilise the benefits of both products and provide both fast acting and long term odour control.

Evogen ON 50x continues to activate in the presence of malodours
In order to assess whether Evogen ON 50x allows odours to be neutralised over time, odours were assessed blind’, at the start and after 24 and 48 hours by a 6 person odour panel, using a scoring system from 0-6 (no odour to very strong odour).
Various odours were absorbed onto pieces of nonwoven fabric placed in disposable containers. Two sprays of Evogen ON 50x were added and panellists evaluated the treated samples at the designated time points.
Figure 4 demonstrates the effectiveness of Evogen ON 50x in reducing a range of offensive malodours, in this case garlic, fish oil, a urine smell, cigarette smoke and sour milk over a 48 hour period.

In a second series of odour reduction panel tests, Evogen ON 50x was combined with Zinador 35L and surfactant blends on two other odourous soils: fox urine and isovaleric acid.
Within the following two tests, the same procedure pictured in Figure 3 was used. Evogen ON 50x was found to be most effective when combined with Zinador 35L and alkyl polyglucoside surfactant (2% NatraSense AG-810) on fox urine, as indicated by the significant reduction of odour after 48 hrs as shown in Figure 5.

In the case of the isovaleric acid (body odour), the odour appears strong throughout the test period for the sample with only tap water applied (control). In comparison, the odour rating for Evogen ON 50x treated samples gradually decreases over time due to the long term soil degradation the product offers. The addition of Zinador 35L and alkyl polyglucoside surfactant (NatraSense AG-810) to Evogen ON 50x is our recommended formulation blend due to the dual benefits demonstrated below in Figure 6. Within this blend, the odour rating is lowest at 30 minutes due to Zinador 35L being fast acting and the odour rating remains low due to the long term soil degradation Evogen ON 50x offers.
