Fluilan™ is a pure liquid lanolin, also known as lanolin oil, that is composed of cholesterol-rich esters. It is a valuable ingredient known for its excellent moisturizing and emollient properties, making it highly beneficial for skin care applications in household products. As a natural substance derived from sheep's wool, lanolin closely resembles the lipids found in human skin. This similarity allows it to effectively penetrate the skin, providing deep hydration and forming a protective barrier that helps to prevent moisture loss. The moisturizing properties of Fluilan™ make it particularly suitable for formulations aimed at nourishing and hydrating the skin.

Lanolin and Derivatives for Home Care

Designed and perfected by nature, lanolin is known to contain specific lipids and oils common to natural substrates. As such, lanolin displays affinity to both natural surfaces and fibers alike with the ability to imitate and augment many of the natural properties displayed.

Lanolin derivatives have a variety of functions and can offer a multitude of consumer and formulation benefits. As a versatile surfactant, lanolin can offer emolliency and moisturisation. Ethoxylated lanolin can also act as a wetting agent and demonstrate performance as effective perfume and oil solubilisers.

Furniture and floor polish
Furniture and floor polishes generally consist of a wax / silicone emulsion system that provides performance benefits for the end consumer. Corona lanolin can replace part of the wax in the emulsion system to enhance shine and overall finish of furniture and flooring without impacting formulation stability. Panel testing of five different types of wood with a polish formulation with and without Corona lanolin was carried out and showed statistically significant differences in the panel preference for the wood treated with the polish formulation including Corona lanolin in all five instances.

Hand dishwash and hand soap
Solan E50 acts as a superfatting agent and increases the mildness of a detergent system. It has the ability to reduce irritation and defatting caused by anionic surfactants. This makes Solan E50 useful in hand dishwashing liquids by providing additional skin care benefits that only lanolin can. Benefits include skin barrier replenishment, prevention of skin dryness and skin cracking. Soaps produce dermal swelling and synthetic detergents can create an intense superficial drying of skin. Both these effects can be reduced by the addition of lanolin and in particular Solan E50. Detergents and heavy duty cleaners also contain solvents to aid removal of dirt and grease that can strip skin of moisture. Inclusion of Solan E50 into heavy duty hand cleaners reduces the de-fatting effects of detergent/ solvent systems, providing moisturisation and skin protection without affecting detergent performance.

Fabric Care
Fiber damage on clothes can lead to increased wear and tear shortening the life of a garment. Many conditioning agents boost the moisture content of fibers but non can fully replenish the lost oils in the same way as Croda lanolin products. For wool, delicate and hand wash type formulations, inclusion of Solan E50 or Fluilan to a formulation at low levels can improve the condition of fibers by replacing these natural oils. Improvements in lubricity also mean that the potential for wear and tear is minimized as the friction and static charge that cause “bobbling” is reduced. The ability for Solan E50 to act as a counter irritant and mildness additive also helps to reduce the irritancy properties in hand laundry products. Solan E50 and Fluilan can be added to detergent systems or conditioners.

Household wipes
Applications within the household can be very demanding and require significant surfactant loading on wipes. Increased skin contact with such wipes can therefore prolong contact and heighten irritation. This presents a greater risk of skin damage that can be lessened with the addition of Solan E50 to a wipe formulation. Solan E50 can reduce irritancy and create a milder formulation minimizing this risk of damage and counteracting the potential for skin irritation.

Fiber finish
In hygiene products such as diapers, Medilan can be incorporated into the finish allowing the benefits of barrier repair and skin softening to be imparted on skin in contact with the fiber. This provides confidence and the comfort in wear that consumers require for such products. For more information on the use of Medilan in this application, please ask your sales representative for brochure “Fiber finish — hygiene”.

Tissue
Balm lotions incorporated onto tissues can provide functional benefits to consumers. Lanolin has the ability to repair and replenish skin’s lipid barrier. In non woven fabrics, Medilan can provide fiber softening and lubricity that lowers friction and hence the potential for reddening caused when fibers rub against skin. At the same time, Medilan is smoothed onto the skin to provide barrier healing properties to consumers.

Leather and shoe
Lanolin has a long standing reputation for use in the preparation and processing of leather as superfatting, emulsifying and softening additives. This is to ensure that leather has the most luxurious feel possible. Within the household sector, Corona and Fluilan can be used in emulsion systems to treat and care for leather and shoes. Replenishment of natural oils that are lost in use ensures that suppleness and softness of leather is retained. Acylan is a more lipophilic product than standard lanolin due to acetylation of the hydroxyl groups. This lipophilicty gives Acylan the ability to form water repellent films to protect leather from water and liquid splash. Due to the way Acylan is processed the emulsification properties are completely removed but the benefits of lubricity, feel and superfatting are retained. This is beneficial for mineral oil based formulations and highly pigmented shoe polishes.
