Barrier Preperation

Barrier preparations are designed to protect skin from defatting by solvents or from the harmful effects of water soluble irritants. Products offering protection against water soluble irritants are often emulsions in the form of creams or lotions containing water resistant materials such as silicone oils, waxes and vegetable oils. Conversely, emulsions containing lipophobic film formers such as  methylcellulose or gum arabic offer protection against non-polar solvents and oils.

Useful emulsifiers for barrier preparations are Polawax GP200 and Cithrol GMS S/E. Polawax GP200 in particular enables the simple formulation of oil in water emulsion creams with excellent body and texture.

Emulsification

Polawax GP200 is a nonionic self-emulsifying wax that forms emulsions of exceptional stability in acid and alkaline media. Whilst in the container the emulsion is of the oil in water type. However, once applied to a surface the emulsion reverses to a water in oil form to assist the deposition of wax and silicone.
