Background

Origin

Seatons Linseed oil is obtained from the seed of the flax plant Linum usitatissimum, which is grown in several areas of the world, currently sourced from Canada, Russia and Kazakhstan. Seatons boiled linseed oils are produced from linseed oil using one or more metallic siccatives to give a range of oils with varying colors and drying times. They are traditionally processed by the controlled oxidation of raw linseed oil. The metallic siccative acts to accelerate the drying process by catalytic means. This causes rapid oxidative polymerisation and the boiled linseed oil can then produce dry films within a few hours.

Characteristics and Applications

Boiled linseed oils have excellent film forming properties which make them a good choice for surface coating applications such as timber treatments.

Formulation Guidelines

Boiled linseed oil is low in viscosity and available in several grades. It contains metallic siccatives that improve drying times by catalyzing the oxidation process. Boiled linseed oil may be used directly on wood but it is recommended that the oil is diluted by up to 50% with white spirit or turpentine and then applied in two or three coats with a brush or cloth.
