Odor Reduction Performance
Zinc complexes are widely used to neutralise odors caused by hydrogen sulphide, mercaptans, thioethers, isovaleric acid and ammonia. ZINADOR™ 35L is a new technology that provides an easier-to-use, more cost-effective approach to formulating zinc complexes into household and industrial products to give effective odor neutralisation.
Improved Solubility and Formulation Compatibility
Formulations are increasingly complicated systems to meet challenging consumer demands. High surfactant or salt systems such as laundry detergents can prove difficult to formulate due to lack of compatibility. ZINADOR™ 35L maintains clarity in solution up to 3.4% sodium chloride, compared to 2% for ZINADOR™ 22L. Similar enhanced clarity for ZINADOR™ 35L was seen in hard water (2500 ppm calcium carbonate) samples.
ZINADOR™ 35L solution remains clear up to 3.4% NaCl, while ZINADOR™ 22L becomes cloudy at 2% NaCl (at equivalent zinc levels of 0.1%).
To demonstrate compatibility between ZINADOR™ 35L and liquid laundry detergents, 2% of ZINADOR™ 35L and ZINADOR™ 22L were added to ten different commercially available liquid laundry detergents. Eight of the ten detergents tested were clear after the addition of ZINADOR™ 35L while only two detergents were clear after the addition of ZINADOR™ 22L. Figure 2 shows the difference between the two Zinador products when added at 2% to a commercially available, fragrance-free liquid laundry detergent.

Odor Reduction Panel Testing – Performance Testing Against Body Odor
ZINADOR™ 35L was compared to ZINADOR™ 22L and a fully formulated, commercially available zinc ricinoleate product in independent laboratory panel testing, to determine the effectiveness against real body odor. Equivalent performance is shown across all three tested products against body odor at same zinc level . Additionally, incorporation of surfactant to ZINADOR™ 35L results in significantly higher performance than the fully formulated, commercially available zinc ricinoleate product.

The results in show that ZINADOR™ delivers excellent odour reduction, with equal to or better performance than the current market-leading zinc-based odour neutralisation technology.
Odor Reduction Panel Testing – Performance Testing Against Cat Urine Odor
Independent laboratory panel testing was completed to determine the effectiveness of zinc-based odour neutralisers against cat urine on fabric swatches. ZINADOR™ 22L and ZINADOR™ 35L showed equivalent performance at the same zinc level. (ZINADOR™ 35L provides 75% more odour neutralising power than ZINADOR™ 22L at equivalent level of product.) As shown in Figure, the addition of a surfactant enhances performance of ZINADOR™ 35L. A commercially available fully formulated zinc ricinoleate performed similarly to ZINADOR™ 35L with the addition of a single surfactant.

The results in Figure show that formulated ZINADOR™ delivers excellent odor reduction performance, with equal to or better performance than the current market-leading zinc-based odour neutralisation technology.
Odor Reduction Testing – Performance Testing Against Ammonia Odor
In Figure, GC/Headspace analysis shows binding of ammonia by ZINADOR™ 35L and zinc ricinoleate as a function of increasing levels of active. Volume of 1% solutions of ZINADOR™ 35L and zinc ricinoleate were plotted on x-axis (mL).

The results in Figure shows that ZINADOR™ 35L provides significantly improved odor neutralisation of ammonia versus zinc ricinoleate at the same zinc level (~0.03%).
Odor Reduction Testing – Performance Testing Against Fishy Amine Odor
When testing the odour reduction performance of ZINADOR™ 35L and a zinc ricinoleate competitive product using GC/Headspace analysis of fishy amine odor, ZINADOR™ 35L again provides significantly improved odour neutralisation at the same zinc level (~0.03%) as shown in Figure 6.

ZINADOR™ 35L in Laundry Detergent
A build-up of body soil during the wear-wash-wear cycle of fabrics can result in a fatty organic residue causing malodour on the fabric. To prove the efficacy of ZINADOR™ 35L, two sets of standardised malodour swatches were washed in a front-loading washing machine on the warm temperature setting. The swatches were washed with a fragrance-free detergent containing either ZINADOR™ 35L or zinc ricinoleate, both at an equal zinc level of 0.1%. A panel of analysts were asked which swatch had less odor, both before and after line drying. The damp swatch was tested immediately after a rinse and the dry swatch was tested after line drying for 3 hours.

The results in Figure show that most panellists found that swatches washed with detergent containing ZINADOR™ 35L had less odor. This was evident when evaluating both wet and dry (74% and 84% respectively). Adding ZINADOR™ 35L to laundry detergent has been shown to significantly reduce persistent body odours on fabric both before and after drying, making ZINADOR™ 35L the ideal choice for odour control in laundry detergents.
Wide Formulation Compatibility
ZINADOR™ 35L is an 85% bio-based product that delivers major new formulating and cost advantages over the current market-leading technologies. Formulating with ZINADOR™ 35L is easier and more effective than current leading zincbased technology. Odour neutralisation claims and performance are easily achieved with ZINADOR™ 35L, without the need for adding:
- Anti-foaming agents
ZINADOR™ 35L is 100% water soluble, with excellent stability in very hard water conditions, over a broad pH range (2- 11) and temperature range. Current leading zinc-based odor neutraliser technologies require different products for different pH ranges, as well as added chelators for protection against hard water conditions.
ZINADOR™ 35L is fully compatible with leading non-ionic and anionic surfactants, fragrances and hydrogen peroxide.

It should be transported and stored below 40°C and is stable to freeze/thaw. In end-use formulations ZINADOR™ 35L is stable up to 60°C. ZINADOR™ 35L was developed and produced with Itaconix polymer technology.
