Applications

When selecting a defoamer consideration must be given to more than its ability to kill foam. The product must be sufficiently stable to shear, dyes, chemicals, temperature and pH to prevent adverse effects such as scum formation, silicone spotting or other surface defects.

DeCAL 5155 is a stabilized silicone defoamer. The special manufacturing process ensures highly efficient defoaming performance coupled with high stability. Unlike many other silicone defoamers, DeCAL 5155 is stable in the presence of high concentrations of electrolytes from a variety of sources including:

  • pH modifiers
  • Water (hardness ions and trace metals)
  • Dyes
  • Chemicals (cationic and anionic)
  • Salts (e.g. sodium chloride, sodium sulfate)

Predilution:

Before adding to the mix, DeCAL 5155 should be predispersed with 10 to 20 times its weight of water at 15 - 30°C using hand mixing or gentle low speed mechanical agitation. Lengthy or high speed mechanical mixing should be avoided at this stage.

Application levels:

Because of its highly effective defoaming properties, relatively low levels of DeCAL 5155 will be required. For most applications 0.25 to 0.50% (by weight) will provide effective foam control. Greater amounts may be required in the presence of high surfactant levels.

Application procedure:

For best results, DeCAL 5155 should be added to the water first before the addition of all other chemicals and should not be premixed with any of them. However, when DeCAL 5155 has been properly prediluted as described above, it can be post added during processing if needed.
