Dow North America Monoethanolamine (MEA)
INCI Name: Ethanolamine
Applications: Chemical & Industrial Manufacturing, Textiles & Nonwovens, Fluids & Lubricants
Product Families: Additives, Functional Additives, Performance Additives
Chemical Family: Alcohols, Amines
End Uses: Metalworking Fluids, Cleaners, Detergents
DOW Monoethanolamine (MEA) offers abroad spectrum of application opportunities, primarily in detergents, textile finishing and wood treating. Other applications include use as “down hole” in oil well chemicals and in metal working to prevent corrosion, and as catalysts that promote stability during the reaction process in the manufacture of flexible and rigid urethane foams. Because MEA combines the properties of amines and alcohols, MEA exhibits the unique capability of undergoing reactions common to both groups. As an amine, MEA is mildly alkaline and react with acids to form salts or soaps. As an alcohol, MEA is hygroscopic and can be esterfied. Features & Benefits Detergents MEA imparts a reserve alkalinity to the laundry bath, which is essential to efficient cleaning. MEA is an effective oil and anti-redeposition agent. Textile Finishing MEA is used as reaction intermediates for the preparation of durable press fabric finishes and softeners. When reacted to form amine soaps, useful as scouring agents for wool and silk because of its low alkalinity. Because it is hygroscopic, MEA is used in the preparation of vat printing pastes. Wood Treating MEA is used in both alkaline copper quaternary(ACQ) and copper azole formulations for treating wood to improve its resistance to pests and decay. Both are arsenic-free alternatives to the phased- out CCA formulations.

VERSENE™ 100 Chelating Agent
Applications: Processing & Packaging, Oil, Gas & Mining, Paper & Pulp
Product Families: Functional Additives, Builders & Chelators, Adjuvants & Formulation Ingredients
End Uses: Cleaners, Descalers, Textiles
VERSENE™ 100 Chelating Agent is an aqueous solution of the tetrasodium salt of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid. Na4EDTA is the strongest, most versatile, and widely used chelant for controlling metal ions over a broad pH range in aqueous systems. It will not chelate monovalent metal ions such as sodium or potassium, but will chelate most multivalent metal ions (e.g., Fe, Cu, Mn, Ca, Mg, Zn) in a 1:1 molar ratio. The chelation reaction is virtually instantaneous in most cases. Calcium and other alkaline earth metals are most effectively chelated above pH 4. Na4EDTA chelates most transition metals below pH 12. VERSENE 100 is completely miscible with water, but is not soluble in organic systems. Na4EDTA is stable under widely varying conditions of temperature, acidity, alkalinity, and the presence of other chemicals. Na4EDTA is attached, however, by strong oxidizing agents such as hypochlorite bleach. In some applications, Na4EDTA can be reclaimed for reuse.

DOWANOL™ DPM Glycol Ether
Applications: Coatings & Finishes, Building Envelope, Flooring & Surfaces
Product Families: Additives, Solvents & Carriers, Functional Additives
Chemical Family: Glycols, Ethers, Glycol Ethers
End Uses: Solventborne Coating, Waterborne Coating, Flexography Ink
DOWANOL™ DPM glycol ether is a mid-to slow evaporating solvent. This hydrophilic solvent has 100% water solubility and is ideally suited as a coupling agent in a wide range of solvent systems. DOWANOL™ DPM glycol ether has a higher flash point than DOWANOL™ PM glycol ether making it easier to handle, store, and ship. Often incorporated into latex emulsion coatings DOWANOL™ DPM glycol ether can be used to prevent shocking (coagulation of emulsion) when hydrophobic solvents are used. More broadly, its hydrophilic nature makes it an ideal coupling aid in water reducible coatings, and cleaning applications. DOWANOL™ DPM glycol ether’s intermediate evaporation rate allow it to be used in a potentially wider range of systems than many other solvents.

Applications: Chemical & Industrial Manufacturing, Textiles & Nonwovens, Fluids & Lubricants
Product Families: Additives, Functional Additives, Performance Additives
Chemical Family: Alcohols, Amines
End Uses: Metalworking Fluids, Cleaners, Detergents
DOW Triethanolamine (TEA) offers a broad spectrum of application opportunities, primarily in detergents and textile finishing. Other applications include use as intermediates in concrete additives and adhesive, rubber, agricultural and photographic chemicals; use as a component of cement grinding aids; use as “down hole” in oil well chemicals and in metalworking to prevent corrosion; and use as catalysts that promote stability during the reaction process in the manufacture of flexible and rigid urethane foams. Because TEA combines the properties of amines and alcohols, TEA exhibits the unique capability of undergoing reactions common to both groups. As an amine, TEA is mildly alkaline and reacts with acids to form salts or soaps. As an alcohol, TEA is hygroscopic and can be esterfied. Features & Benefits Detergents TEA imparts a reserve alkalinity to the laundry bath, which is essential to efficient cleaning. TEA is an effective oil and anti-redeposition agent. Textile Finishing TEA is used as reaction intermediates for the preparation of durable press fabric finishes and softeners. When reacted to form amine soaps, useful as scouring agents for wool and silk because of its low alkalinity. Because it is hygroscopic, TEA is used in the preparation of vat printing pastes.
