Kalrez® 0090 Features & Benefits
DuPont scientists recently developed Kalrez® 0090 parts which provide outstanding repeated rapid gas decompression (RGD). Stringent NORSOK M-710 tests conducted by the independent Materials Engineering Research Laboratory Ltd. (MERL) in the UK confirm the outstanding RGD resistance of Kalrez® 0090 parts. Some seals can pass NORSOK M-710 with multiple internal cracks developed during test cycling, but Kalrez® 0090 O-rings do much better than that. They obtain the test's best possible rating. Ratings and test conditions are summarized in the table below.
- Kalrez® 0090 is a black product with broad chemical resistance combined with high modulus and high hardness.
- Kalrez® 0090 parts have outstanding resistance to extrusion and rapid gas decompression (RGD).
- This product has been independently tested and certified by the Materials Engineering Research Laboratory (MERL - UK) to meet NORSOK-M-710 Rev 2 requirements.

Superior performance in harsh environments
In addition to providing outstanding RGD resistance, Kalrez® 0090 seals have other properties that ensure superior performance.
-
Chemical resistance. Kalrez® parts withstand attack by more than 1800 chemicals and solvents. Kalrez® 0090 can be resistant to sour multi-phase fluids containing H2S as shown by the external NORSOK M-710 Rev 2 Sour Fluid aging resistance certification provided by MERL (UK).
-
High-temperature resistance. Retains high levels of elasticity and recovery even after long-term exposure to temperatures up to 250°C (482°F).
-
High modulus at low elongation provides excellent extrusion resistance
Vespel® meets challenges in back-up rings
In addition to Kalrez® 0090 parts, Vespel® CR-6100 back-up rings and parts have shown their ability to perform in a range of high-pressure pumps and mechanical seals used in hydrocarbon processing and refining. Custom machined from a polymeric composite consisting of carbon fibers held within a matrix of DuPont™ Teflon® PFA fluoropolymer resin (PFA/CF reinforced composite, 20% mass fraction random X-Y oriented carbon-fiber), Vespel® CR-6100 parts deliver:
- Higher temperature resistance and more mechanical strength than alternative materials such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK).
- Nearly universal chemical resistance.

• Annex B: Rapid Gas decompression, Kalrez® 0090 was given the highest rating, "0", indicating "no internal cracks, holes or blisters of any size." (O-ring size AS568-312)
• Annex A: Sour gas chemical aging
• Required documentation of material properties is provided below in accordance to Table 1 of the ISO23936-3 standard
Certified as per TOTAL GS PVV 142
Tested by CETM (Technical Center for industry testing) against TOTAL GS PVV 142 Rapid Gas Decompression requirements
• Pass with no cracks, no blisters on CSD = 5.33 mm (O-ring size AS568-349) (See Table 2 conditions)
• Pass with no cracks, no blisters on CSD = 6.99 mm (O-ring size AS568-425)
Technical Details & Test Data
• Every product delivery comes with a COA (Certificate of Analysis) that contains the information required as per ISO 23936-2.
• The tear strength result reported in is a "typical physical property." This result is representative of this particular test, but may not be related to actual field performance. End use testing will be required to determine product suitability for use.
• High pressure gas permeation data is required for large components and depends on the part geometry. The data can be generated once testing conditions have been agreed with the customer.
