KRISTALEX™ Hydrocarbon Resins

Kristalex™ hydrocarbon resins are made from a mixture of purified styrenic monomers. Varying the proportions of the monomers and the molecular weight of the polymer results in a diverse range of products. A major application of Kristalex™ resins is the modification of the end-blocks of styrenic block copolymers. The grades of Kristalex™ resins with low softening points will tend to soften and contribute to the tack of block copolymer formulations while the higher softening point grades tend to strengthen the end-blocks and increase cohesion and high temperature resistance. Kristalex™ hydrocarbon resins are made from pure monomers so they are water-white in color and extremely stable against thermal and oxidative degradation. In addition, their aromatic nature makes them extremely compatible with polymers that contain styrene. Kristalex™ LV grades have very low organic content. Kristalex™ resins are also used in EVA packaging adhesives to provide specific adhesion properties. Other uses for Kristalex™ resins include coatings, clear sealants, laminating adhesives, textile dry sizes, and plastic modification.

Endex™ hydrocarbon resins are made from purified aromatic monomers selected to produce a resin with an unusually high glass transition temperature and softening point. Due to these unique properties Endex™ resins are especially suited for use as modifiers for the end-blocks of styrenic block copolymers. Since Endex™ resins have a higher glass transition temperature and softening point than styrene they act to reinforce compounds based on block copolymers, giving them higher cohesive strength and resistance to high temperatures. Endex™ hydrocarbon resins are water-white in color and extremely stable against thermal and oxidative degradation. Since Endex™ resins associate only with the non-elastic styrenic portions of a block copolymer they normally do not impart tack properties.

Plastolyn™ hydrocarbon resins are made from mixed purified aromatic materials selected to produce a high softening point polymer. Plastolyn hydrocarbon resins are characterized by near water-white color, good thermal stability and high temperature resistance. Plastolyn 290LV is a versatile, aromatic, water white, with very high softening point and very low organic volatile content. Plastolyn hydrocarbon resins are used as flow modifiers for plastics, especially polyvinylchloride (PVC) and acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS). They are also commonly used as rubber modifiers for shoe soles. Plastolyn hydrocarbon resins are also compatible with polychloroprene and are especially suited for formulating contact adhesives for footwear and leather assembly when very high cohesive strength or low color is required. Some grades of Plastolyn hydrocarbon resins have high compatibility with polyolefins and are widely used as film modifiers.

Regalite™ hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins are made from mixed aromatic/aliphatic resins which are subsequently selectively hydrogenated to produce a wide range of materials with low color, high stability and broad compatibility. Selective hydrogenation is the key to controlling the exact aromatic/aliphatic balance of the product which in turn determines the compatibility and application of the product. Regalite™ resins with a low level of hydrogenation will be more compatible with aromatic or polar polymers such as high vinyl acetate types of EVA. More highly hydrogenated grades will be more compatible with nonpolar polymers such as polyolefins. Each of the Regalite™  hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins can be used to achieve an optimal balance of mid-block and end-block compatibility in styrenic block copolymer formulations. Regalite™ hydrogenated hydrocarbon resins are available in a wide softening point range from liquid up to a softening point of 125°C.

Advantex multifunctional neutralizing amine enables a variety of benefits to architectural coatings, including superb pigment dispersion, excellent emulsion stability, and outstanding syneresis control. Formulating paints with Advantex instead of ammonia can save money. Internal tests show that formulating with Advantex allows for the development of lower odor, lower-VOC paints that can contain up to 75% less propylene glycol, 50% less surfactant, 40% less de-foamer and up to half as much dispersant than a comparable formulation with ammonia. Additionally, Advantex offers a unique level of protection against flash rust, when compared to other amine additives. Piccotex™ hydrocarbon resins are made from mixed purified aromatic materials. Due to the diversified composition of the base materials Piccotex resins function more like aromatic resins based on crude aromatic oil than other types of pure monomer aromatic resins. Since Piccotex hydrocarbon resins are based on pure monomers, however, they are water-white in initial color and exhibit excellent thermal stability. They are therefore suitable for adhesive applications where color and stability are critical when a highly colored aromatic tackifier will not suffice. Piccotex hydrocarbon resins are compatible with S-B-S block copolymers, high vinyl acetate content EVA resins, SBR, polychloroprene, and acrylic elastomers. Piccotex hydrocarbon resins are available in a wide range of softening points from 75-120°C. Piccotex resins will also act as end-block modifiers for all types of block copolymers, but have the best overall compatibility with S-B-S type block copolymers.
