Chemical Family: Acetates
Eastman™ Isopropyl Acetate is a urethane grade, fast evaporating, mild odor solvent that is miscible with most common organic solvents and has properties intermediate between ethyl and butyl acetates. It is an active solvent for many types of synthetic resins such as cellulose acetate butyrate, nitrocellulose, vinyl copolymers, polyesters, polyamides, acrylics, and alkyds. *Modeled using The Estimation Programs Interface (EPI) Suite™ (EPA), BIOWIN v4.10 module The chemical substances for this product are listed as Inert Ingredients Permitted for Use in Nonfood Use Pesticide Products under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Eastman CAB-531-1
Markets: Color Cosmetics, Nail Care, Automotive OEM Coatings
Technologies: Film Formers, Functional Additives, Other Resins & Binders
Chemical Family: Esters, Cellulose & Cellulosics
INCI Names: Cellulose Acetate Butyrate
Eastman Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB-531-1) is a cellulose ester with a higher butyryl level than Eastman CAB-381 type esters. Tough films with good resistance to marring and weathering are possible through combinations of cellulose acetate butyrate with thermoplastic acrylic resins. Eastman CAB-531-1 and CAB-381 esters are similar in hydroxyl content and solubility characteristics, both being soluble in a wide range of solvents. Eastman CAB-531-1 is a more flexible resin that requires lower plasticizer modification than the Eastman CAB-381 esters. When CAB-531-1 is dissolved in appropriate solvents, a clear, colorless solution is produced.Eastman CAB-531-1 is based on cellulose, one of the most abundant natural renewable resources. The calculated approximate bio-content value of 38% for Eastman CAB-531-1 was determined by using six bio-based carbon atoms per anhyroglucose unit divided by the total number of carbons per anhyroglucose unit. Although the value reported is not specifically measured for bio-carbon, it can be estimated based on typical partition data. Eastman n-Butyl Propionate
Markets: Automotive OEM Coatings, Vehicle Refinish, Automotive OEM Coatings
Technologies: Alcohols, Dispersing & Wetting Additives
Chemical Family: Alcohols & Diols
Eastman™ n-Butyl Propionate is a non-HAP, slow evaporating, and urethane grade solvent with good solvent activity for most coating resins. In lacquers and ambient cure enamels, this solvent is used as a retarder solvent. Its slow evaporation rate allows for flow and leveling but does not prevent the quick rubbing and sanding of the lacquer. Many resins are letdown in a solvent thinning tank to make handling, storing, and shipping easier. Eastman™ n-Butyl Propionate is useful as a letdown solvent because of its low volatility, good solvent activity, and urethane grade quality. Since n-Butyl Propionate is not on EPA's HAP list, it is a good choice for replacing xylene in coating applications such as high-solids thermoset enamels. It is also used as a processing solvent for high-solids acrylic resins, and for coatings applied via electrostatic spray equipment.
