Eastman AQ

Eastman AQ™ 48 Ultra Polymer

Markets: Color Cosmetics, Hair Care, Other Printing Applications

Technologies: Film Formers, Other Functional Additives, Dispersing & Wetting Additives

Chemical Family: Polyesters

INCI Names: Polyester-5

Eastman AQ™ 48 Ultra polymer is a sulfopolyester that disperses directly in a mixture of ethanol and water at room temperature or in warm water without the assistance of surfactants or other additives. Low-viscosity aqueous dispersions can be prepared at concentrations up to 30% polymer solids. Eastman Mak product card banner
PRODUCT

Eastman MAK

Markets: Other Parts & Components, Industrial Coatings, Decorative Paints & Coatings

Technologies: Aldehydes & Ketones, Dispersing & Wetting Additives

Chemical Family: Ketones

Eastman™ MAK (Methyl n-Amyl Ketone) has a high solvent activity, slow evaporation rate, low density, low surface tension, and high boiling point. These properties make MAK a very good solvent for cellulosic lacquers, acrylic lacquers, and high-solids coatings. Because regulations limit the weight of solvent per gallon of coating, formulators favor the use of low-density solvents that help reduce the VOC content of a coating. MAK is lower in density than ester, aromatic hydrocarbons, and glycol ether solvents with similar evaporation rates. The low density and high activity of MAK are significant advantages when formulating high-solids coatings to meet VOC guidelines. MAK is also used as a polymerization solvent for high solids acrylic resins. The chemical substances for this product are listed as Inert Ingredients Permitted for Use in Nonfood Use Pesticide Products, and in Food Use Pesticide Products with limitations, under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Eastman™ MPK (Methyl n-Propyl Ketone) is a medium evaporating, urethane-grade solvent. It is an active solvent for most synthetic resins including acrylics, polyesters, cellulosics, epoxies, vinyls, and alkyds. Its high solvency, low density, and medium evaporation rate make it attractive as a letdown solvent for high-solids resins used in formulating coatings with low VOC content. It is used in gravure printing inks and also provides excellent performance for a wide range of cleaning and surface preparation applications for the transportation industry. Eastman™ MPK - Substitution for Aerospace Cleaning Applications: From cleaning to pre-treatment, tests prove Eastman™ MPK is an effective non-HAP solvent alternative to MEK and toluene. With a vapor pressure of 27.8 mm @ 20°C, well below the 45 mm limit allows for compliance to NESHAP (National Emission Standards for Hazardous Air Pollutants) requirements for hand-wipe cleaning operations for aerospace. http://www.epa.gov/ttnatw01/aerosp/aeroimp.pdf. Eastman™ MPK satisfies the rigorous aerospace performance requirements. It evaporates more slowly than MEK solvent due to its larger molecule. This property allows for much of the solvent to remain on the wipe instead of emitting into the air and extends the useful life of the wipe. *Eastman™ MPK (Methyl n-Propyl Ketone) is not on EPA’s HAP or SARA list, but it does contain <= 10% MIBK, which is on both lists. The chemical substances for this product are listed as Inert Ingredients Permitted for Use in Nonfood Use Pesticide Products under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Eastman EB Solvent (Ethylene Glycol Monobutyl Ether) offers numerous benefits in coating, ink, and cleaner applications. It is an excellent solvent for many coatings resin types, including alkyd, phenolic, maleic, epoxy, and nitrocellulose resins. It is an exceptional retarder solvent for lacquers, improving gloss and flow-out. Eastman™ EB Solvent is also widely used in amine-solubilized, water-based coatings because of its high flash point, complete water solubility, slow evaporation rate, low surface tension, and high coupling efficiency. This product is an effective coalescent that improves film integrity in both architectural and industrial maintenance latex paints. Its unique combination of properties enables the effective removal of contaminants when used in Industrial & Institutional and/or household cleaners. On November 18, 2004, the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) removed ethylene glycol monobutyl ether (EGBE) from the Clean Air Act (CAA) list of Hazardous Air Pollutants (HAP). Thus, EGBE is no longer subject to the Maximum Achievable Control Technology (MACT), residual risk and other specific requirements found in the CAA. Eastman sells EGBE under the brand name Eastman™ EB Solvent. The chemical substances for this product are listed as Inert Ingredients Permitted for Use in Nonfood Use Pesticide Products, and in Food Use Pesticide Products with limitations, under the Federal Insecticide, Fungicide, and Rodenticide Act (FIFRA). Eastman CAB-531-1

Markets: Color Cosmetics, Nail Care, Automotive OEM Coatings

Technologies: Film Formers, Functional Additives, Other Resins & Binders

Chemical Family: Esters, Cellulose & Cellulosics

INCI Names: Cellulose Acetate Butyrate

Eastman Cellulose Acetate Butyrate (CAB-531-1) is a cellulose ester with a higher butyryl level than Eastman CAB-381 type esters. Tough films with good resistance to marring and weathering are possible through combinations of cellulose acetate butyrate with thermoplastic acrylic resins. Eastman CAB-531-1 and CAB-381 esters are similar in hydroxyl content and solubility characteristics, both being soluble in a wide range of solvents. Eastman CAB-531-1 is a more flexible resin that requires lower plasticizer modification than the Eastman CAB-381 esters. When CAB-531-1 is dissolved in appropriate solvents, a clear, colorless solution is produced.Eastman CAB-531-1 is based on cellulose, one of the most abundant natural renewable resources. The calculated approximate bio-content value of 38% for Eastman CAB-531-1 was determined by using six bio-based carbon atoms per anhyroglucose unit divided by the total number of carbons per anhyroglucose unit. Although the value reported is not specifically measured for bio-carbon, it can be estimated based on typical partition data. For applications that require food contact compliance, please refer to Eastman CAB-531-1, Food Contact.

Eastman n-Butyl Propionate

Markets: Automotive OEM Coatings, Vehicle Refinish, Automotive OEM Coatings

Technologies: Alcohols, Dispersing & Wetting Additives

Chemical Family: Alcohols & Diols

Eastman™ n-Butyl Propionate is a non-HAP, slow evaporating, and urethane grade solvent with good solvent activity for most coating resins. In lacquers and ambient cure enamels, this solvent is used as a retarder solvent. Its slow evaporation rate allows for flow and leveling but does not prevent the quick rubbing and sanding of the lacquer. Many resins are letdown in a solvent thinning tank to make handling, storing, and shipping easier. Eastman™ n-Butyl Propionate is useful as a letdown solvent because of its low volatility, good solvent activity, and urethane grade quality. Since n-Butyl Propionate is not on EPA's HAP list, it is a good choice for replacing xylene in coating applications such as high-solids thermoset enamels. It is also used as a processing solvent for high-solids acrylic resins, and for coatings applied via electrostatic spray equipment.
