- Sea buckthorn (SB) is a thorny nitrogen fixing deciduous shrub that produces orange- colored berries rich in fatty acids.
- SB pulp oil and seed oil differ considerably in fatty acid composition : palmitoleic acid (16:1n-7) is mainly from pulp oil while linoleic (18:2n-6) and α-linolenic (18:3n-3) acids are the major fatty acids in the seed oil.
- Among the conjugated fatty acids in SB, Palmitoleic acid (C16:1) is a unique Omega 7 conjugated fatty acid that is closely related to conjugated linoleic acid (CLA).
- In addition to the special fatty acid profile, SB berries are found to be rich in a variety of phytochemicals with physiological properties such as vitamins (B, C, E and K), flavonoids, carotenoids, tocopherols and many volatile compounds (i.e., aliphatic esters, alcohols and hydrocarbons and even significant amounts of inositol and methylinositol. All these have contributed to numerous health benefits of SBO.

Technical Details & Test Data
- Pharmacology and Clinicals
- SB was used by the Chinese military in the 1950s to aid soldiers suffering from plateau sickness. This gave a start to the SB industry and began the research on its health benefits.
- In vitro and clinical studies show that the SB fruit has a positive effect in the treatment of type 1 diabetic patients improving the glucose and lipid metabolism, possesses high anti-oxidant, hemostatic and anti-inflammatory effects and even helps prevent cardiovascular disease and cancer.
- Omega 7 (palmitoleic acid) has been recognized as the most important active in SB oil, which has shown to be anti-inflammatory and able to enhance overall cardiovascular health, improves gastrointestinal health by enhancing digestive tissue, and contributes to better skin, hair and nails. It is also believed to play a role in blood sugar and weight control.
