Botanical Information
Algae name: Chlamydomonas acidophila
Family: Chlamydomonadaceae
Caracteristics: Green unicellular microalga characterized by its flagellar motility and its ability to generate ion channels directly activated by light. These chloroplasts multiply in water and can be cultivated in bioreactors.
Environment: These algae are naturally found in extreme conditions: extremely acidic
waters. As a result, the selected strain bears the Latin name acidophila.A sustainable & innovative culture process
This microalga is cultivated in a reasoned & sustainable way, in which the environment
remains at the center of our concerns. Expanscience sources this microalga using
an innovative and patented french technology: photobioreactors.A concentrate of algae peptides as a protective cocoon for sensitive skins
ALGAENIA® is bioinspired from the ecosystem where this microalga was originally found: as it thrived where the waters are known to be highly inhospitable (pH, heavy metals, ...), the resulting peptides helps the skin endure the extreme conditions of its environment. ALGAENIA® acts as a cocoon for the skin to help it resist against sensitization and allergic reactions while soothing & moisturizing it.
A sensitive skin is a reactive skin
Considered as a skin syndrome, associated with sensations of skin discomfort (redness, scratching, tingling, stinging, burning) sensitivity affects about 50% of adult population.
Deficient skin barrier function, hypersensitivity to external factors and disproportionate response to these factors are the main causes of skin sensitivity.External sensitizing factors
- IL1α, IL1RA, IL8, TNFα, PGE2: key mediators of inflammation in response to external triggers
- Basophils / Mast cell: responsible for inflammatory reactions during immune response, through histamine release
- Histamine: itch inductor
- Chemotactic factors: chemical stimulus attracting & activating basophils
- NMF: Natural Moisturizing Factors
- Involucrin: cornified envelope key protein, involved in the skin barrier function

Modulation of the inflammation
- ALGAENIA® inhibits TNFα release Reconstructed Human Epidermis (3D), SDS stress, ALGAENIA® 0,5%, 24h.
- ALGAENIA® regulates PGE2 release Keratinocytes, PMA stress, ALGAENIA® 0,5%, 24h.
By inhibiting the key markers involved in inflammation, ALGAENIA® protects sensitive skins from overreacting to chemical stresses.
Protective and soothing effect against sensitizers & allergens
- ALGAENIA® prevents the skin overreaction to allergen-mimicker Nickel
Keratinocytes, NiSO4 (Nickel) 10μM stress, ALGAENIA® 0.5%, 24h. - ALGAENIA® inhibits basophil activation, involved in histamine secretion
Fresh blood, ALGAENIA® 1.75% 15min, basophil activator substance (chemotactic peptide fMLP) 15min.
ALGAENIA® acts as a soft cocoon protection against its rude environment, by limiting the skin reaction to sensitizers and allergens.
Clinical Studies Inflammation protection & comforting effect
Prevents rednesses & inflammation (Double-blind, randomized study versus a placebo)
- 19 women with normal skins (18≤age≤60)
- Each subject applied a cream with 3% ALGAENIA® and a placebo cream on separate zones on their forearm twice daily for 14 days
- Controlled erythema artificially induced with a 1% Methyl Nicotinate solution
- Blood flow (TiVi image analysis) & Redness assesments, (a*, L*a*b*) measured at T0, T20min (maximum erythema intensity) and T50min
ALGAENIA® protects effectively against inflammatory episodes even at maximum erythema intensity and keeps on reducing the visible effects of inflammation afterwards.
Comforting sensitive skins: Soothing & Moisturizing (Double-blind, randomized study versus a placebo)
- 36 women (age>18), with a sensitive skin to at least 2 of the following factors of stress:
- chemical (surfactants, lactic acid...)
- mechanical (friction, wool...)
- environmental (heat/cold, UV...)
- Hemifacial application twice a day with a cream with 3% ALGAENIA® and a placebo cream for 28 days
- Instrumental measurements:
- redness evaluation (L*a*b*)
- skin barrier condition (TEWL)
- skin hydration (corneometer)
- quantification of cytokines, IL1α, IL1RA, IL8, NMF, involucrin
Soothing
By inhibiting cytokines IL-1α & IL-8, as well as the rebalancing of IL-1RA/IL-1α ratio, ALGAENIA® protects sensitive skins from inflammation, encourages dermal homeostasis and limits redness.
Barrier strengthening & hydration
ALGAENIA® increases NMFs and involucrin as well as reduces TEWL for an increased
skin moisturization overall.
Storage & Handling
- Storage
Algaenia® should be stored between 15°C and 25°C, in an airtight container, protected from light.
