LITHOS Industrial Minerals Talc LPP60

LITHOS Talc LPP is highly lamellar, very soft talc with good aspect ratio. This is realized by a specific delaminating process, which creates best lamellar structure instead of breaking the plates in smaller parts. Products with a top cut to 10 microns and respectively median particle sizes of 2 microns are realized.

Compatible Substrates & Surfaces: Plastics

Compatible Polymers & Resins: Polyamides, Polyethylenes (PE), Polypropylenes (PP)

Synonyms: Agalite, Talc (Mg3H2(SiO3)4), Talcum

Features & Benefits

Advantages and properties
  • Highly lamellar, the softest mineral (Mohs hardness 1)
  • Very high whiteness => suitable for applications in plastic, paper or coating industry
  • Top cut to 10 microns
  • Hydrophobic (water-repellent), not soluble in water
  • Chemically inert, acid and alkali resistant
  • Organophile (binds easily with organic materials)
  • Electrically and thermally insulating
Product Highlights

Talc in paper production

  • During the paper production talc leads to huge benefits during the process and for the products.
  • Talc can be used in paper recycling as well as in new production of paper, pulp and cardboard as filler.
  • The characteristic properties of talc prevent pitch agglomeration within the production machine.
  • The use of talc improves the properties of the finished products, in-creases the quality and reduces the production costs.

Talc in plastics

  • The application spectrum for talc in plastics is nearly unlimited.
  • Talc can be used among other things in automotive industry, food packaging industry, for white goods, cases for laptops, window pro-files and polypropylene production.
  • During the production process and in the application the material act as a functional filler (for example as an anti-caking agent, a pro-cessing aid inert carrier and absorbent, etc.)
  • The use of talc improves the specific characteristics of plastics an increases the quality, therefore purity, aspect ratio, particle size dis-tribution and whiteness are the determining factors.
Effects and benefits

Talc in paper production

  • Lowers the abrasion of paper ma-chine fabrics and mechanical ele-ments
  • Effective pitch control
  • Improving runability
  • Enhances the printability of the fin-ished paper
  • Improves plant productivity and pa-per quality (fewer spots, defects, holes)
  • Increased compressibility and max-imized color transfer
  • Opacity improvement
  • Cost saving

Talc in plastics

  • Through its laminar structure and the high aspect ratio of talc the stiffness increase.
  • Talc acts as a lubricant and is partic-ularly gentle to machines
  • Increases the scratch resistance
  • A pure talc, with a low loss of igni-tion and a high aspect ratio, helps keep plastics parts dimensionally stable.
  • Increases resistance to UV radia-tion
  • Variation of the flow properties
  • Ideal anti-blocking agent
  • Extremely fine talc acts as nucleation excipient and increases the heat re-sistance and crystallization tempera-ture of plastics.

Applications & Uses

Compatible Substrates & Surfaces
Application Examples
  • Plastics: Filler medium for polypropylene/polyamide/polyethylene; increases rigidity and whiteness levels, acts as nucleating agent, insulating, flame-retarding, water-repellent
  • Paints and coatings: Architectural, coating and corrosion protection, gindable systems, adhesives; improved visocosity and covering power, prevents sedimentation, fixes pigments
  • Paper: Filler material, pitch control, surface coating; imporves whiteness, opacity and printability
  • Ceramics, rubber, asphalt: Filler material; increases rigidity and temperature resistance, reduces processing temperature
  • Pharmacy and cosmetics: powder, additve for pills; servers as a carrier for both dry and moistrue materials
  • Food and animal feed Release agent and carrier substance for colors and nutrients (food additive E553b), flow regulating agent
  • Other uses: Process additive, lubricant and anti-adhesive, clearing effect in waste water
