When present in intestinal cells, Betaine can assist in maintaining gut tissue integrity, thus supporting nutrient absorption. Betaine is a methyl donor and supporting protein and DNA synthesis. Betaine can partially replace choline and is a more efficient methyl donor in comparison to choline chloride. Thus use of Betaine can contribute to improved carcass quality through the higher percentage of lean meat and reduction in fat deposition.

Betaine has been shown to protect cells from dehydration, where a slight increase in cell water volume moves cells toward a more anabolic state, while dehydration moves the cell toward a catabolic state.
