- Properties and Applications
TAFIGEL PUR 64 is a so-called associative thickener, which builds up and stabilizes viscosity by forming a framework between thickener molecules, binder and pigments. Formulations with TAFIGEL PUR 64 exhibit maximum pseudoplasticity. Viscosity is increased primarily in the low shear rate range, but without generating an elastic component that worsens the flow. The low viscosity in the high shear range resulting from the thickener results in excellent sprayability of the coating systems. TAFIGEL PUR 64 can be used alone or in combination with other TAFIGEL thickeners or with cellulose or acrylate thickeners.
TAFIGEL PUR 64 was specially designed for use in industrial paints, but is also suitable for use in the following systems:
- Interior and facade paints
- Dispersion paints
- Corrosion protection paints
- Synthetic resin plasters
- Adhesives and fillers.
Advantages of using TAFIGEL PUR 64:
- high sag resistance
- good leveling
- excellent atomization during spray application
- pH-independent thickening effect
The resulting effect of polyurethane thickeners can be influenced by other formulation components including type and quantity of binder, coalescing agent, solvent, wetting and dispersing agent, pigments and matting agents. TAFIGEL PUR 64 was specially developed to efficiently thicken polymer dispersions that are difficult to thicken and to minimize the effects of other formulation components.
- Recommended Levels and Use
TAFIGEL PUR 64 can be added undiluted to the grind and before adding the binder. For post addition, the preparation of a masterbatch is recommended with a suitable water/co-solvent mixture (e.g. /butyl-triglycol, di-propylenglycol-mono-methylether or propyleneglycol-n-butyl-ether/water). Ladder studies are recommended to determine optimum levels. Normal dosage ranges from 0.3 - 2 % on total formulation.

- Storage and Handling
TAFIGEL PUR 64 is not sensitive to freezing. The product should be stored cool and dry. During storage a creamy layer is formed on the surface. Consequently TAFIGEL PUR 64 has to be stirred properly before use. The minimum shelf life in closed containers is 12 months from the date of manufacture.
