Beside the use in hydrochloric acid, AHCl is also an important reagent used in chemical transformations, e.g.:
- Hydrochlorination of rubber
- Production of vinyl and alkyl chlorides
- Production of pharmaceutical products
- the semiconductor industry, it is used to both etch semiconductor crystals and to purify silicon via trichlorosilane (SiHCl3).
- cotton treatment to delint it, and to separate it from wool.
- organic synthesis, e.g. generation of chloride based Lewis acids which must be absolutely dry to keep their reactivity, etc.
