Mycotoxins are toxic secondary metabolites produced by molds that grow on crops in the field or develop during the storage of crops or finished feed under poor conditions. Despite the fact that mycotoxins are tasteless, odorless and invisible, they are a big concern in animal production as they cause severe economic losses due to their toxic effect after ingestion. The variety of clinical effects caused by mycotoxins after ingestion ranges from oestrogenic, immunotoxic, neurotoxic, mutagenic to carcinogenic depending on the type of mycotoxin, its dosage and the animal species.
However, the largest economic impact in livestock production is often linked to chronic exposure to low levels of various mycotoxins, without clear clinical symptoms. These have a great impact on production performance, through their effect on gut health, feed intake, reproduction, organ health.
