Features & Benefits

General Information

Topogard is a selective herbicide for the control of annual broadleaf weeds in peas and potatoes. Topogard is not a hormone material and can be used near tomato, grape and other hormone sensitive crops. The action of Topogard, by absorption through the roots and the leaves, ensures a quick knockdown of weeds and provides residual weed control. Weed control may be less effective if application is made when weeds are in a dry, hardened growth condition. Providing the spray has dried on the weed foliage, rain following application is not harmful. To avoid crop damage and to obtain satisfactory weed control, carefully observe the directions on this label and never exceed recommended rates of application.

Applications & Uses

Spillage

Exclude non-essential people from the area. Wear protective clothing and prevent material from entering waterways. Absorb spill with inert material such as soil, sand, etc, and place in a waste container. Wash area with water and detergent, and absorb with further inert material. Dispose of safely to a suitable landfill.

Weeds Controlled

Annual poa, black nightshade, calandrinia, chickweed, annual mouse-ear chickweed, clovers (seedlings), cornbind, fathen, field pansy, fumitory, hedge mustard, henbit, redroot, scarlet pimpernel, scentless chamomile, shepherd’s purse, speedwells, spurrey, storksbill, twin cress, wild turnip, willow weed and wireweed. For best results annual broadleaf weeds should be no greater than 4 true leaves, as larger weeds, especially storksbill and wireweed, are less susceptible. Note: Californian thistle and other perennial broadleaf weeds are not controlled.

Directions For Use

It is an offense for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds. Important: Before using Topogard ensure that equipment is completely cleaned of all traces of oil, surfactants or emulsifiable concentrate pesticides.

Rate And Timing of Application

PEAS (Process, Garden and Field) – annual weeds Rate of Application: 0.75 - 1 liter of Topogard in not less than 250 liters water per hectare using the lower rate when weeds are very small or when treating tender crops. Do NOT add a wetting agent. Time of Application: Topogard must be applied to actively growing pea crops with 3 - 5 nodes, less than 15cm high, and not suffering from disease, wind damage, drought stress, or checked by unseasonal cold, wet conditions. As peas are a tender crop which depend on the waxy leaf surface for selectivity, use the crystal violet dye retention test to confirm the presence of sufficient leaf wax before spray application. After rain allow 2 - 3 days drying before application. POTATOES – annual weeds Rate of Application: 1 - 2 liters of Topogard in not less than 350 liters of water per hectare. Use the lower rate where scarifying for weeds is carried out before crop canopy closure. Time of Application: Apply Topogard after rows are molded, free from clods, and when the weeds are still small. Do NOT apply if more than 5% of the crop has emerged, as damage will result. In areas where the crop is left in the ground for long periods following maturity, the residual life of Topogard will be insufficient and weed reinfestation may occur.

Application Methods

Topogard can be applied with conventional ground spraying equipment. Care should be taken to avoid excessive overlapping. Topogard is non-corrosive and almost non-abrasive. Do not use strainers finer than 300 micrometers. Wash equipment thoroughly after use.

Mixing

Pour the correct quantity of Topogard into a partly filled spray tank, then add the remaining water with agitation. The spray mixture should be kept continually agitated before and during spraying, and before spraying after a stoppage.

Resistance Management

GROUP C1 HERBICIDE

Topogard contains terbutryn and terbuthylazine, group C1 herbicides belonging to the triazine chemical family. Some naturally occurring weeds may become resistant when excessive use of the same herbicide occurs. To prevent or delay the development of resistance, use in tank mixes and/or rotate use with herbicides with a different mode of action. Consult http://resistance.nzpps.org/index.php for alternative modes of action and details of resistance management strategies (if any) for the crops listed on the label.

Compatibility

Topogard contains surface-active agents and when spraying peas, the addition of further surfactants, emulsifiable or soluble concentrate pesticides, foliar fertilizers and nutrient sprays, must be avoided, as this will increase the risk of crop damage. Do NOT add MCPB or other herbicides as damage to pea crops may occur.
