Clear Sizing Paper
Because of their excellent water holding and film forming properties, ETHYLEX starches are highly recommended for surface sizing papers. Availability in a wide viscosity range permits their usage at the size press or calender stack; ETHYLEX films give papers better surface strength and hold out properties than those provided by other starches commonly used. As a result, ETHYLEX starches are products of choice for surface sizing fine quality papers.
The properties of film clarity and continuity permit the use of ETHYLEX starches in transparentizing papers. In these, and other applications, the thinner ETHYLEX starches - 2025 - can be used in the high solids range of 15 to 20%. Their stability and the minimal retrogradation which they exhibit enhance their value in this type of application.
Size Press Paper Coating
EHTYLEX starches provide process advantages such as viscosity stability and improved runnability to metered size presses. These advantages are not seen in other starches. ETHYLEX starches are especially useful as co-binders in both clear and pigmented surface sizes in conjunction with synthetic resins, polyvinyl alcohol, latexes and other film formers. Hydroxyethylated starches are fully compatible with these materials, and act with them to contribute to the barrier properties that impede the migration of moisture, wax, lacquer and varnish.

ETHYLEX 2025 is used extensively in size press coatings to make premium quality printing papers. In these papers the ETHYLEX starch provides the rheology necessary to produce uniform coverage and the high adhesive strength needed for binding pigments to the surface. These two properties - uniform coverage and adhesion - contribute significantly to the manufacture of high quality printing papers.
Paper Coating

Certain grades of coated paper, such as label paper, require especially high print quality. ETHYLEX starches are used in these high-solids, pigment-binder systems because they possess unusually high adhesive strengths and provide good compatibility with latex. The ETHYLEX starches also contribute water holding ability, viscosity stability, and consistent rheological properties to coating mixtures. The trend to increased coating speeds necessitates the consistent, stable viscosities of ETHYLEX starches.

Hydroxyethylated starches

This reduces the use of more expensive coating materials such as wax and polyethylene in the manufacture of food board.*

It is well recognized that ETHYLEX starche 2025 is reliable co-binders for the latexes and proteins commonly used in paperboard coatings. Their water holding properties and viscosity stabilities often permit their use at up to 50% of the binder system. *The FDA has established the status of hydroxyethylated starch used in the manufacture of food packaging materials. All ETHYLEX starches are identified as “Industrial-Starch Modified” under FDA guidelines cited in 21 CFR 178.3520. FDA regulations described in 21 CFR 176.170 and 21 CFR 176.180 provide for the use of Industrial-Starch Modified in the manufacture of food packaging materials.
Textile Warp Size

For warp sizing applications, ETHYLEX starches provide the manufacturer with stable, cooked paste viscosities and improved film forming capabilities. Two products in particular, ETHYLEX 2065 and 2075, are used extensively for warp sizing polyester/cotton yarn blends. Both starches typically applied in combination with polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) as the polyester content exceeds 50% of the blend. ETHYLEX starches are fully compatible with PVA in various sizing operations and help achieve high weaving efficiencies and cost control.

ETHYLEX 2025 has been proven successful with the high pressure squeeze roll when higher solids are required to obtain higher size add-on. Enzyme desizing is accomplished with greater ease on yarns sized with ETHYLEX than on yarns sized with most other textile starches.
Textile Finishing
ETHYLEX 2025 has found wide acceptance in textile finishing formulas because of its stability, compatibility and reactivity with other materials.
Miscellaneous Applications

Other applications involving the ETHYLEX starches include: ETHYLEX® 2025 Gum as a coating-color binder for ceiling tile, and several of the ETHYLEX starches, as adhesives in a large number of paper converting applications. ETHYLEX starches are also used as adhesives for bags, tubes, laminated boards, etc., providing increased viscosity stability, increased reactivity with resins and better compatibility with polyvinyl alcohol than other corn starches.
