Additional Information

Dilution of ALFOTERRA surfactant

ALFOTERRA surfactants can easily be diluted with water using static mixing or mechanical agitation. The ALFOTERRA surfactant should be added or metered into water with mixing. Warming the water to 30-35°C will speed the dilution. Water should NOT be added into the ALFOTERRA surfactant as gelling could occur.

Diluting the ALFOTERRA surfactant to between 30 to 80% active should be avoided as high viscosity gel phases are formed between these active levels. When blending two neat ALFOTERRA surfactants, avoid producing a final product with active levels between 30 to 80%.  Refer to the ALFOTERRA surfactant technical data sheets for specific information on viscosity versus active level.

If ALFOTERRA surfactant is diluted and stored longer than 48 hours; a biocide should be added to avoid microbial attack and subsequent degradation of the product.

Transfer Equipment
  • Lines that transfer ALFOTERRA surfactants should be 316 Stainless Steel, Polyethylene or lined with TEFLON.
  • Valves and fitting should be 316 Stainless Steel or lined with TEFLON
  • Gaskets should be 316 Stainless Steel, VITON, TEFLON or GYLON.
  • Pumps should be 316 Stainless Steel

Storage & Handling

Product Stability

Hydrolysis of ALFOTERRA Surfactants is catalyzed by heat and low pH conditions. It is recommended that the pH of stored product be checked periodically. The optimal pH range is 8-10, If the pH has drifted below 7, adjust to the range 8-10 with e.g. sodium hydroxide solution under proper agitation. Fully demineralized water, free of carbon dioxide should be used for checking the pH. Dilute surfactant to 5% active for pH measurement.

Storage and Handling
  • ALFOTERRA Surfactants are delivered with a pH of 6-10. While the product is stable under appropriate storage conditions (see below) in the unlikely event of product decomposition acidic matter develops. Contact with inappropriate materials may result in rust or corrosion.
  • The ideal material for storage tanks and vessels is stainless steel (Steel No. 316, 1.4541 or 1.4571), or fiberglass reinforced plastics with vinyl ester or polyester resin. However, isophthalic polyester should not be used. Contact with carbon steel should be avoided.
  • ALFOTERRA Surfactants are temperature sensitive. Heating the surfactants above 50°C must be avoided, even briefly, because decomposition via hydrolysis may occur.
  • The ideal storage temperature is +10 to +30°C. Glycol heating or hot water set to 45°C maximum temperature is recommended.
  • Steam heating has to be avoided as hot spots may degrade the product.
  • For long-term storage (>15 days) the material should be maintained at +20 to +30°C, blanketed with nitrogen or other inert gas and gently mixed or recirculated.
  • Vigorous mixing which causes air entrapment should be avoided.
