DISPERAL is the trademarks for the high-purity, highly dispersible boehmite powders and sols/dispersions manufactured by Sasol in Brunsbüttel, Germany, and in Lake Charles, Louisiana, USA. These boehmites (alumina hydrates), which are nano-sized in the dispersed phase, exhibit a unique combinations of purity, consistency and dispersibility that make them excellent materials for use in colloidal applications. The Sasol range of dispersible boehmites has traditionally been used in applications such as sol-gel ceramics, catalysis, refractory materials, rheology control and surface frictionizing. Other applications include surface coating as well as paint detackification, polymeradditives and functional fillers.

Preparation of DISPERAL 100 Dispersions

In non-polar solvent (toluene or xylene)

In order to prepare a DISPERAL 100 dispersion of 25 wt. % DISPERAL 100 content, put 50 g of DISPERAL 100 powder and 16.7 g of wetting agent MARLOWET 4538 (available from Sasol) under intensive stirring into 133.3 g of xylene or toluene. Mix it with a stirrer and add ultrasound for about 2 minutes. Typically the viscosity is below 10 mPa·s.

In polar solvent (iso-propanol)

In order to prepare a DISPERAL 100 dispersion of 20 wt. % DISPERAL 100 content, put 40 g of DISPERAL 100 powder and 20 g of wetting agent MARLOWET 4538 (available from Sasol) under intensive stirring into 140 g of iso-propanol. Mix it with a stirrer and add ultrasound for about 2 minutes. Typically the viscosity is below 10 mPa·s.

In water

In order to prepare a DISPERAL 100 dispersion of 40 wt. % DISPERAL 100 content, put 80 g of DISPERAL 100 powder and 38 g dispersing aid (available from Lubrizol, BASF or Byk Chemie) under intensive stirring into 82.0 g of water. Mix it with a stirrer and add ultrasound for about 2 minutes. Typically the viscosity is below 100 mPa·s.
