Possible applications of ammonium thiosulfate (NH4)2S2O3 (7783-18-8)

TIB® Thio ATS is an ammonium salt which is very stable – in free state, this thiosulphuric acid is unstable and therefore could not be used in industry. This ammonium thiosulfate, which is an odorless and at the same time colorless powder, is readily water-soluble. By releasing the crystals the temperature of the liquid is reduced, the lack of heat energy is removed, and pentahydrate Na2S2O3 · 5 H2O, also known as the fixing salt, is formed.

It is used as a fixing salt in the photoindustry for fixation, and it would be possible to form an equally liquid or solid form. It is similar to the use of sodium thiosulfate. Any type of photographic material can be fixed, such as amateur cinema, reproduction or color films, as well as X-ray or document films as well as photo-paper. It is also suitable for bleaching processes of paper or textile fibers, in particular to remove any excess chlorine.

TIB® Thio ATS from TIB Chemicals is available in crystalline form as well as in two types of solutions. The concentration is between 56 and 58 per cent, respectively 58 and 60 per cent. Depending on the application, ammonium thiosulfate can be used as a fertilizer for plant cultivations such as rape, maize or grain. In the following paragraph, we will describe this application in detail.

Use of ammonium thiosulfate (NH4)2S2O3 (CAS-No. 7783-18-8) in agriculture

TIB® Thio ATS, available at TIB Chemicals in crystalline form and two differently concentrated solutions, has many advantages in agricultural use. On the one hand, it is used for the production of fertilizers. A mixture with an AHL solution or, for example, urea is suitable for this purpose. Ammonium thiosulfate (ATS) assumes the role of sulfur supplier. Sulfur is present in two different mineral formations, which make it possible to supply plants with sulfur in an optimal ratio over longer periods of time. In principle, mixing of AHL, i.e. an ammonium nitrate urea solution, with amminium thiosulfate is possible in any desired ratio. However, in order to achieve a uniform mixing ratio, it is recommended to first submit AHL and then add TIB® Thio ATS as desired.

Important functions, which TIB® Thio ATS from the range of TIB Chemicals in fertilizer production takes over, are:

• Various NPKS fertilizers are suitable for mixing
• Inhibitor in the hydrolysis of ammonium in nitrate as well as urea in ammonium and carbon dioxide
• Large-scale desalination of the soil, at the same time infiltration due to sodium displacement (soil loosening)
• Triggering of calcium
• Reduction of methybromide and 1,3-dichloropropene
• Improves the effects of Herbecide
• Contributes to increased nutrient uptake (Fe, Mn, Zn)

TIB® Thio ATS from TIB Chemicals is suitable as a highly effective nitrification inhibitor, can be easily mixed with water and thus serves farmers as an efficient way of reducing leachate pollution due to nitrate. Use ammonium thiosulfate as a powerful additive in the production of your fertilizer in the concentration of your choice, the ideal supplement for the admixture and fertilizer admixture according to individual scales. The direct single application is not suitable for ATS due to a lack of authorization according to the Fertilizer Ordinance, but only as a supplement in the production of fertilizers.
