Dr. William Lewis, a research scientist and inventor of superhard scratch- and abrasion-resistant coatings, founded a small consulting and development company in 1990 that later became California Hardcoating Company. J. Smith & Sons eventually evolved into Smiths Metal Centers Ltd.
