Tasmannia lanceolata (syn. The shrub varies from 2 to 10 m high. This attractive tree has shiny dark green pointed leaves with scarlet stemletts. It has small, waxy, cream flowers which develop into dark charcoal brown pepper berries, only born by the female plants. The small cream or white flowers appear in summer and are followed by black, globose, two-lobed berries 5–8 mm wide, which appear in autumn. There are separate male and female plants. The oil is steam distilled from the fruit of the tree and has an intense peppery background aroma, with spicy, exotic top notes, a hint of cinnamon and the Australian bush.

It naturally occurs on the lower slopes, gullies, and swamps, where soil does not dry out. The species is widely grown in southern Africa, and its leaves are used for the production of distilled eucalyptus oil. The essential oil is steam-distilled from the twigs and leaves and has a woody, camphorous, yet fresh aroma. Native to Indonesia, Malaysia and the Philippines, Patchouli is now cultivated in tropical and sub-tropical regions around the world. The oil is widely used as a fragrance in India and as an insect repellent. Patchouli is used in herbal medicine in Asia as an aphrodisiac, antidepressant and antiseptic. It is also used for headaches and fever. Its aphrodisiac effects come from it having a very similar molecular structure to human pheromones. Patchouli essential oil is often used in aromatherapy to treat skin complaints. It is thought to have a regenerative effect on skin tone and to help clear conditions such as eczema and acne. The oil may also be used for varicose veins, acne, cold sores, skin irritations, prophylactic, fungicidal and hemorrhoids. Australian Blue Cypress is native to Australia and grows in the Northern Territory (including Melville & Bathurst Islands), northern Western Australia, Cape York and northeast Queensland. It is a medium to large sized tree, from 15 to 45 meters in height. The timber is very aromatic, resistant to termites and splits quite readily into fine chips or kindling for lighting cooking fires. Australian Blue Cypress essential oil is extracted via steam distillation of the stem and branches. The trees are harvested and are then steam distilled for around 48 hours. The harvesting of quite big trees requires heavy machinery and a long distillation process which both add significantly to the cost of the oil. Resinous compounds in the bark react during distillation with other aromatic compounds to create guaiazulene, an anti-inflammatory compound similar to chamazulene that gives the essential oil its dark blue color.
