NAI (replacing the original AI, animal-derived treatment) is based on the chemical bonding of Disodium Stearoyl Glutamate to pigments and substrates. The NAI treatment was quickly embraced worldwide because of its unique benefits. The Compatibility of NAI treated pigments in silicone-based systems has been amply demonstrated by their usage in a number of commercially available W/S liquid foundations. NAI and NAID is longwearing and provides a moist, dewy feel while being much easier to disperse in oils and silicones.

ACT is a hybrid surface treatment consisting of vegetable derived amino acid, fatty acid metal soap and silane. Each component provides unique properties that synergistically make the ACT treatment one of the most effective treatments developed to date. (USP 6,482,441.) Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate is a synthetic compound derived from fatty acid. When Iron Oxides are surface treated with Isopropyl Titanium Triisostearate, they display strong color development properties with increased adhesion to the skin. TPT is very reactive to almost all pigments and forms a uniform coating of lipophilic isostearate groups. There are abundant fatty ester groups on the treated surface; therefore, the titanate treated pigments can be easily wetted by and dispersed in organic vehicles, like esters, mineral oils or petrolatum. Oil absorption is substantially reduced, allowing the loading of pigments in the formula to be increased. TPT treated pigments are suitable for liquid foundations, lipsticks, blushes, eye shadows, and sunscreens.

MiyoAQUA is a hydrophilic surface treatment based on alginate. This anionic polysaccharide is found naturally in oceans around the world in the cell walls of brown algae and kelp. Inorganic pigments such as iron oxide and pigmentary titanium dioxide surface treated with sodium alginate are highly hydrophilic and provide excellent dispersibility and re-dispersibility into the water phase.

Primrose silica coated pigments are hydrophilic pigments that are ideal for O/W and water-rich systems. The silica coating, with a refractive index similar to human skin, provides a soft focus effect by increasing diffuse reflection. As the trends towards O/W systems continues, Primrose pigments help overcome some of the typical drawbacks of O/W systems such as gritty feel, weak color development, and wet/dry color stability.
