Plantaren® 1200 N UP is an alkyl polyglucoside (APG®) surfactant that is in a unique class of non-ionic surfactants obtained from renewable, plant-derived raw materials. It is made from natural, renewable, plant-derived feedstocks and is readily biodegradable. Applications for this product include body wash, face wash, liquid hand soap, shampoo, sensitive skin care, and wipes. This product has a pasty appearance, with an active substance content of 48-55%.

Irritation and Mildness Data

Skin Compatibility:

  • BASF’s APG surfactants not only show very low irritation potentials under use conditions, they also cause less skin dryness and skin barrier damage than conventional surfactants.
  • This further confirms the excellent suitability for skin rinse-off formulations, where mildness is key.

Soap Chamber Test: TEWL on Day 5

 - Skin Compatibility - 1

  • The soap chamber test (SCT) is used to evaluate the cumulative irritation potential of surfactants. Parameters assessed also give a measure of possible surfactant- induced skin dryness and skin barrier damage (TEWL).
  • Surfactants were repeatedly applied to the volar forearm under occlusion on 5 consecutive days and skin dryness was assessed on day 5; skin barrier damage on day 8.

Oral Compatibility:

  • Plantacare®4 1200 UP is classified as being non- or minimally irritating. It is significantly milder compared to SLS.
  • Combinations of conventional SLS with Plantacare® 1200 UP lead to milder formulations than SLS alone and can help to reduce the irritation potential of a toothpaste.

EpiOral Tissue Model, 1% AS, pH 7.0:

 - Skin Compatibility - 1

In this study, the test samples were applied to the oral tissue model. The viability of the cells over time is measured and used to calculate the time of exposure until viability is reduced to 50% [ET50].

Plantaren® 1200 N UP synergies in combination with BASF surfactants result in a high rate of foaming (mm/s), also known as foamability.

  • Amount of foam: Amount of foam after two pumps

  • Bubble size: Pore/bubble size and spread
  • Foam stability: Stability, how fast the bubbles burst
