- Asphalt: improves adhesion to aggregate, particularly under wet conditions
- Industrial cleaners: provides emulsification in solvent cleaners and corrosion inhibition
- Paints and cleaners: promotes viscosity build of attapulgite clay, provides corrosion inhibition in primers/paints, antiskinning agent in alkyd paints
- Metal lubricants: adds lubricity and corrosion inhibition, displaces moisture
- Flotation agents: used for removal of impurities from clay and ores
- Petroleum: provides corrosion inhibition in oil acidifying and secondary oil recovery; serves as emulsifier and water scavenger in diesel additives, mineral oil, and kerosene
- Agriculture: acts as emulsifier for oil sprays and herbicides
- Laundry: functions as emulsifier for fabric softeners
- Polymers: provides antistatic properties during manufacture of resins and PVC, processing aid during polymer production
