Columbia seed BENTGRASS Legendary Velvet Bentgrass

Legendary Velvet Bentgrass is a new introduction in 2005 from Lebanon Turf, and will set the new standard for golf course greens. It is the first of an allnew generation of velvet bentgrasses that may change the way Golf Course Architects and Superintendents design and manage golf course greens in the future. Legendary features a vibrant medium-green color, dense growth habit, and a very smooth consistent putting surface. It also exhibits improved shade and drought tolerance and has a reduced requirement for water, fertilizer, and fungicide inputs as compared to traditional creeping bentgrass varieties. Velvet bentgrass is generally more dollar spot resistant than creeping bentgrass and more brown patch resistant that colonial bentgrass. Legendary was selected for improved resistance to dollar spot, copper spot and brown patch, as well as overall turf quality.

Product Highlights

In the 2003 NTEP Greens Height trials, Legendary tied for # 1 for overall turf quality of velvet bentgrass varieties. It also ranked #3 overall for turfgrass quality under low maintenance, #1 overall for seedling vigor, tied for #2 overall for summer density, and tied for #1 overall for Brown Patch ratings. Legendary is adapted well from the upper transition zone to cool season zones in the Northern tier states, Canada, and Europe. Velvet bentgrass has been used for decades in the New England States and in Europe.  Many golfers are actually willing to pay a premium to play on these courses with Velvet bentgrass greens. Velvet bentgrass performs best in slightly acidic soils. Acidifying fertilizers containing ammonium sulfate like Country Club 16-4-8 will help improve velvet bentgrass performance in higher pH soils. The high density of velvet bentgrasses requires frequent light topdressing and vertical mowing to help limit excessive thatch production. Treatment with a Pythium fungicide will help prevent damping off during the seedling establishment stage and enhance stand establishment, once established they are quite resistant to Pythium. The benefits of using velvet bentgrass include reduced nitrogen, water, and fungicide inputs making it an excellent choice for new or renovated golf course greens.
