Using typical methods for the polymerization of ethylenically unsaturated monomers, hydroxypropyl acrylate (HPA) can be used to attach hydroxyl groups to an acrylic polymer backbone. The pendant hydroxyl groups can then act as sites for reaction with a variety of cross-linking agents. HPA allows faster curing cycles and/or reduced baking temperatures, compared with hydroxyalkyl methacrylates. Also HPA can be formulated at higher solids in coating applications.
