Features & Benefits

General Information

Orion Nico Ultra is rapidly absorbed by foliage and translocated throughout the weed. This stops the synthesis of vital plant growth chemicals. Weeds stop growing immediately and discoloration of leaves occurs, followed by dieback that spreads slowly throughout the weed. Note: Orion Nico Ultra contains in inbuilt surfactant system. Do NOT add additional surfactants.

Spillage

Exclude non-essential people from the area. Wear protective clothing and prevent material from entering waterways. Absorb spill with inert material such as soil, sand, etc, and place in a waste container. Wash area with water, and absorb with further inert material. Dispose of safely to a suitable landfill.

Weeds Controlled

Grasses: Barnyard Grass, Bristle grass, Broom corn millet, Couch, Crowfoot Grass, Kikuyu, Pasture grasses (volunteers), Rough Bristle Grass, Smooth Witchgrass, Summer Grass, Wild Oats. Broadleaf Weeds: Bathhurst Burr, Black Nightshade, Groundsel, Fathen, Fumitory, Redroot, Sow Thistle, Thorn Apple, Twincress, Water Pepper, Wild Portulaca, Willow Weed. Weeds Suppressed: Grasses: Mercer Grass. Broadleaf Weeds: Apple of Peru, Bindweed, Buttercup, Californian Thistle, Chicory, Dock, Clover, Oxalis, Potatoes (volunteers), Scotch Thistle.

Application

The crop growth stage best for application is between the 2 and 8 leaf stage when the crop is growing vigorously without moisture stress and free of wind damage. Caution: Application to crops greater than 500 mm in height risks crop injury. Do NOT use on popcorn. Orion Nico Ultra can be used safely on maize grown for seed on existing NZ varieties already tested for crop safety in NZ. Apply this product carefully as spray drift may cause serious damage to other desirable plants. Apply evenly to the weed canopy using ground based spray equipment at a minimum water rate of 200 liters per hectare to maximize coverage. Position the boom nozzles between the rows of the maize for direct coverage of weeds avoiding boom overlap. Do NOT apply Orion Nico Ultra into the maize or sweetcorn whorls as crop damage may occur. The use of nozzles on droppers from the boom will improve target weed coverage and minimize crop injury. The use of droppers or band spraying equipment is essential when spraying sweetcorn.

Withholding Period

It is an offense for users of this product to cause residues exceeding the relevant MRL in the Food Notice: Maximum Residue Levels for Agricultural Compounds Maize green feed and silage: 56 days from the last application Sweetcorn: do not harvest for human consumption or graze treated crop for 56 days last application.

Soil Residues

To minimize soil residues, treated areas should be deeply cross cultivated to ensure maximum dispersal of residues. Ryegrass and small grain cereals should not be sown in areas treated within the previous 5 months

Resistance Management

GROUP B HERBICIDE

Orion Nico Ultra belongs to the sulfonylurea chemical group. Some naturally occurring weeds may become resistant when excessive use of the same herbicide occurs. To prevent or delay the development of resistance, use in accordance with label instructions and use tank mixes and/or rotate use with herbicides with a different mode of action. Consult http://resistance.nzpps.org/index.php for alternative modes of action and details of resistance management strategies (if any) for the crops listed on the label.

Directions For Use

CULTIVATION

Do not cultivate during the 10 days before an Orion Nico Ultra application as this may decrease weed control by placing weeds under stress. The optimum timing for cultivation or side dressing of fertilizer is 7 – 14 days after an Orion Nico Ultra application.

RATES of APPLICATION

Weed Rate (liters/ha) Critical Comments
Couch 1 Apply when sufficient couch foliage is present for good coverage.
Mercer Grass (suppression), Kikuyu 1.3 Apply when sufficient weed foliage is present for good coverage but before the grass has formed a thick layer. Shading from a good crop canopy after application will improve control. In the following season, a repeat application will improve overall control.
Annual Grasses 0.7 – 1 Use the low rate only if following a pre-emergence herbicide application and if weed pressure is low. Apply when sufficient weed foliage is present for good coverage. Apply to summer grass at the maximum rate and before plants reach three tillers or tillers are 75mm in length.
Broadleaf Weeds 0.7 – 1 Use the low rate only if following a pre-emergence herbicide application and if weed pressure is low. Apply before weeds have reached the 4 true leaf stage, (75 to 100mm) and use in soil areas where the organic matter level is low to medium. Weeds larger than 4 true leaf stage may only be suppressed. Mature weeds will not be adequately controlled. To broaden the weed spectrum add a suitable tank mix herbicide.
Oxalis (Suppression) 1 – 1.3 The higher rate will improve contro

Mixing

Prior to mixing Orion Nico Ultra, thoroughly rinse sprayer, tank, booms, hoses, and nozzles with water. Shake container well before pouring. Pour Orion Nico Ultra into the spray tank half filled with water, and add the remainder of the water while agitating. If adding other post-emergence herbicides, add after Orion Nico Ultra is thoroughly mixed in the half filled tank. Apply the Orion Nico Ultra spray mix within 24 hours of mixing.

Do not contaminate aquatic environments with product, spray drift or empty container. Spray drift or equipment contamination may cause serious damage to desirable plants. Do not allow spray drift outside the target area to occur.

Interaction With Insecticides

Do NOT apply to maize or sweetcorn previously treated with soil-applied organophosphate insecticides, or to any crop that has been treated within 7 days before or after with foliar applied organophosphate insecticides, as severe crop injury may result.

Spray Equipment Decontamination

To prevent injury to subsequently sprayed sensitive crops, thoroughly decontaminate spraying equipment immediately after spraying: 1. Drain tank and flush tank, boom and hoses with clean water for at least 10 minutes. 2. Fill tank with clean water and 1 liter chlorine bleach (3% sodium hypochlorite) per 100 liters water. Keep agitation system running for 15 minutes while flushing hoses and boom, then drain. 3. Repeat step 2. 4. Remove and clean nozzles, filters and screens separately. Rinse thoroughly with clean water and flush through hoses and boom to remove traces of chlorine.

Weather Conditions

Warm moist conditions and adequate soil moisture, both before and after application, will improve control. Maize stressed due to weather conditions may show a temporary yellowing or crop stunting. Orion Nico Ultra is rainfast 6 hours after application.
