- Product Background
The “Artemisia” botanical genus owes its name to Greek mythology: the plant, which was highly prized in Ancient Greece for its medicinal properties, can be likened to the mission that Zeus conferred on Artemis, Greek deity of nature and wilderness: that of protecting women and assisting them during childbirth. Artemisia herba-alba grows abundantly in the wild across all of northern Africa, from pre-Saharan regions to the high-altitude plateaus of the Atlas Mountains. Care must be taken to differentiate it from many other varieties in the Artemisia genus, such as white mugwort, sweet mugwort and absinth, whose posterity was assured through its consumption as a spirit in artistic circles during the 19th century.
