- Anti-allergic - Portulaca oleracea extract contains a large amount of catecholamines such as norepinephrine and dopamine. These substances have anti-allergic property. Thereby, portulaca oleracea extract can shrink skin capillaries, and relieve facial redness. Moreover, portulaca oleracea extract has a significant improvement effect on skin allergy caused by long-term use of hormonal cosmetics. It is an effective anti-allergic ingredient widely used in cosmetics. Plamed people test the anti-allergic effect of portulaca oleracea extract. First applied histamine to both two arms, after 3-5 minutes erythema and itching appeared. Then applied 0.5% of portulaca oleracea extract water solution on the right arm, applied only water on the left arm. Erythema and itching on the right arm was improved, and the situation was much better than the left arm.
- Anti-inflammation - Purslane is rich in omega-3 fatty acids. Omega-3 fatty acids, as an unsaturated fatty acid, are important anti-inflammatory ingredients in human skin. It can contract vascular smooth muscle. So portulaca oleracea extract has the effect of soothing skin inflammation, inhibiting skin itching caused by dryness. - Anti-oxidation - Purslane is abundant in antioxidants that fight free radicals, destroy DNA and cause skin cell death. Free radicals promote aging by destroying skin’s natural protective barrier. Antioxidants such as vitamins A, B1, B2 and C in portulaca oleracea extract can neutralize free radicals and prevent wrinkles and fine lines. In addition, an article in BioMed Research International shows that the portulaca oleracea extract contains three powerful antioxidants (vitamin E, C and carotene); the antioxidants brighten skin and reduce skin damage caused by UV rays, thus delaying signs of skin aging.
- Skin-Whitening - When cells are damaged by ultraviolet light, tyrosinase oxidizes tyrosine, then causing pigmentation. Portulaca oleracea extract inhibits tyrosinase activity and prevents melanin synthesis. It protects skin from light, with a certain whitening effect.

Purslane (Latin name: Portulaca oleracea L) also named pursley, verdolaga, is an annual succulent plant of portulacaceae family. It has green leaf, yellow flower, white root and black seed. Except for the cold areas there are distribution of purslane around China. It mainly grows in vegetable garden, farmland and roadside; it is a common field weed. Purslane is also widespread throughout the world in temperate and tropical regions. The components of purslane are complex, mainly including alkaloids, coumarin compounds, flavonoids, phenols, terpenes and sterols. Therefore, purslane extract has good antibacterial and anti-oxidative activity. Portulaca oleracea is of low planting cost but of high medicinal value. The whole herb is used for medicinal and cosmetic purposes. It is widely applied in medicine and cosmetics.
