J. Smith & Sons eventually evolved into Smiths Metal Centers Ltd. Established in 1780 at a site in Clerkenwell, London, the original business became a well-renowned name in clockmaking, from large turret clocks for buildings such as churches to small decorative clocks for mantelpieces. As a result of mass clock manufacture, Smiths became adept at purchasing raw materials on a global basis. We successfully transformed the business into a supplier of these raw materials to other manufacturing companies. Over time, the clock making side of the business declined, ceasing production in 1938. Smiths was still a sizeable business but instead of clock making it now focused all of its efforts on material stockholding and distribution.

Smiths Metal Centers High Density PE is a high-quality general purpose engineering plastic materials. Its chemical name is polyethylene. It’s available in a range of grades and forms to suit many applications.

Smiths Metal Centers Acrylic PMMA is an amorphous thermoplastic which is optically transparent, unaffected by moisture, and offers a high strength-to weight ratio. Common trade names for this material include Plexiglas®, Acrylite® and Lucite®. Acrylics are not recommended for use with chlorinated or aromatic hydrocarbons, esters or ketones. However, the material is unaffected by aqueous solutions of most detergents, acids, alkali’s and laboratory chemicals. It is both a thermoplastics and transparent plastic and is often used as an alternative to glass, but should not be used in structural applications due to poor impact resistance.

Acetal-C ESD90, dissipative is a high-quality engineering plastic material. It is used to prevent uncontrolled static discharge in sensitive electronic environments or in explosive atmospheres.

Smiths Metal Centers Polycarbonate (PC) is supplied as a machine grade which is well suited for a variety of application which requires high impact strength. It is an amorphous transparent material which benefits from a combination of good mechanical and electrical properties. The material is readily recyclable and benefits from good machinability and can be machined to close working tolerances.

Smiths Metal Centers Nylon 6G+MoS2, Black is a high-quality wear resistant engineering plastic material. It is a polyamide with MoS2. The casting process allows the production of larger material sections virtually free from residual stress. It may also be cast into customer shapes that reduce material waste and machining time.
