CBD Isolate vs Full-Spectrum Distillate
  • Isolate is a chemical term used to specify that the only component is solely the specified material. In this case, we’re referring to cannabidiol, or CBD. Thus, CBD isolate is the purest form of CBD that does not contain any other cannabinoids, terpenes, fats, lipids or other compounds found in the hemp plant. Isolate CBD is a white, powdery solid that is 99+% CBD.
  • Distillate is a highly refined extract that has undergone the distillation process. CBD distillate is a golden, viscous oil that typically contains around 70-80% CBD including minor cannabinoids, terpenes and other plant oils and extracts. Distillation is the process of purifying a liquid by heating and cooling. From the perspective of our laboratory, we’re removing the ethanol solvent used to extract the CBD from the hemp plant leaving behind the desired cannabinoids and terpenes.
  • Not only does the physical appearance of isolate and distillate differ, so does the composition of each hemp extract. As mentioned before, isolate is cannabidiol in its purest form. On the contrary distillate is an extract that not only contains around 75% cannabidiol, but also other cannabinoids such as cannabigerol (CBG), cannabinol (CBN) and tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) under the legal threshold of 0.3%. Terpenes are also present in distillate, which is what gives the hemp plant a distinguished taste and smell depending on the strain of Cannabis sativa used to begin the extraction process.

A CBD tincture is a highly potent herbal extract that is produced by introducing CBD isolate or distillate into carrier oils, such as peppermint oil, vanilla oil, avocado oil, hemp seed oil, olive oil, coconut oil, or grapeseed oil. Can you mix CBD with water?

Similar to the above discussion regarding polarity, CBD does not dissolve in water. CBD is hydrophobic (think oil) so it is non-polar whereas water is polar. Traditionally, the two do not mix well. However, nanoemulsion methods allow for CBD to be more “water-compatible” but are marketed as water soluble.

Manufacturing Process of CBD Isolate
  • Extraction
    Hemp processors receive the hemp plant (or sometimes referred to as biomass) and use chemistry and biochemistry techniques to extract the cannabinoids from the plant material then take further steps to isolate CBD in its pure form. In a super-cryo ethanol extraction process such as ours, the initial step is to introduce ethanol to a large centrifuge with the hemp biomass at very low temperatures. The hemp/ethanol mixture is spun and agitated to allow the ethanol to dissolve the desired cannabinoids from the hemp material. After this initial step, the operation following involves purifying and isolating the desired products from the hemp material and removing any unwanted impurities.

 

  • Refinement and Distillation
    The ethanol/hemp mixture is distilled, taking advantage of the lower boiling point of ethanol in comparison to CBD and other cannabinoids. Under increased pressure, the mixture is heated to boil the ethanol but not altering or decomposing the cannabinoids to be isolated.

 

  • Chromatography (Flash and HPLC)
    Chromatographic operations and advanced analytical instrumentation take advantage of the differing polarities of cannabinoids found in the Cannabis sativa (hemp) plant in order to separate to individual components. An everyday example of polarity would be an oil and vinegar based salad dressing. Polar substances are attracted to other polar substance while non-polar substance are attracted to non-polar substances. No matter how much you shake, mix or whisk the salad dressing, over time the oil and vinegar will separate into different layers.
    CBD distillate is introduced into the instrument where it passes through a column. The column is lined with a material that can be polar or non-polar. The more polar cannabinoids will be more attracted to a polar lined column and pass through more slowly while the less polar cannabinoids pass through more quickly, allowing for separation.

 

  • Recrystallization
    After purifying the distillate, the oil undergoes a process called recrystallization. In chemistry, recrystallization is a technique used to purify chemicals. The desired compound can be isolated and impurities can be removed from the solution. To perform recrystallization, a solvent (a chemical able to dissolve other substances) is added to a mixture, in our case CBD distillate, and heated until all of the distillate dissolves in solution. After the CBD distillate dissolves the temperature of the mixture is lowered significantly, this is sometimes referred to as “crashing”. As the mixture is allowed to cool, the CBD molecules within the mixture reassemble into a crystalline structure, separating themselves from the rest of the mixture. This manipulation of temperature called recrystallization is a well-known and used technique in the organic chemistry laboratory. Isolate is tested using advanced chemistry instrumentation to determine and certify the composition is purely CBD with non-detectable (ND) amounts of other cannabinoids, such as THC. Thus, there is no THC in isolate CBD extracts or finished products. The end result is a white, shimmery CBD crystals that can then be pulverized to create tinctures, edibles, balms and salves.
