- Spirulina is considered one of the foods with the highest protein content, reaching 70% of its dry weight and containing high levels of all essential amino acids (Lafarga et al., 2020).
- Spirulina synthesizes beneficial Polyunsaturated fatty acids such as omega-6 (gamma linolenic acid and linoleic acid), vitamins such as from the B-complex and vitamin A, and minerals such as potassium, calcium and magnesium (Lafarga et al., 2020).
- Unique photosynthetic pigments are found in Spirulina such as phycocyanins, chlorophylls, astaxanthin, zeaxanthin and β-carotenes (Lafarga et al., 2020).

- Consuming between 1-19g/day of Spirulina, during a period of 0.5-6 months has a therapeutic effect on in the treatment of metabolic syndrome components, such as atherogenic dyslipidemia, glucose intolerance, abdominal obesity and hypertension (Yousefi et al., 2018).
- Spirulina supplementation of 6g/day shown hepatoprotective and hypolipidemic effects in patients with non- alcoholic fatty liver disease (Mazokopakisa et al., 2014).
