Wickenol 171 is a rich emollient ester derived from natural castor oil. The free hydroxyl group on the hydrostearic acid plus the branching of the alcohol radical contribute to the molecule unique properties including liquidity at room temperature, spreadability, relative ease of emulsification, superb moisturization, skin absorption and nongreasy texture despite its high molecular weight. Some of the suggested cosmetic applications include use in lipstick, greaseless suntan lotions, and rich creams. It is also a pigment dispersant and acts as a binder in pressed powders. Wickenol 171 exerts excellent slip and lubricity without excess moisture or shine.
