  • Exotics or anywhere tannin pull may be an issue.
Application

Recommended Systems

  • Full Sand - 1-2 coats Lock ‘N Seal followed by 2 coats of any Basic Coatings waterbased finishes.
  • NOTE: On white oak or exotic species, 2 coats Lock ‘N Seal will minimize tannin pull.

Application Over Stains And Paints

Allow oil stains to dry per manufacturer’s directions or longer depending on environmental conditions. Apply 2 coats Lock ‘N Seal followed by 1-2 coats of any Basic Coatings waterbased finishes. A test board is recommended with any stain to insure compatibility and color acceptance.

Adding Water

Up to 12 ounces of water can be added per gallon of finish. Adding water will increase the flow and level time during situations of high temperature and low humidity

Surface Preparation

  1. Before sanding, clean the floor using Basic Coatings’ Squeaky™ Cleaner following label instructions. Cleaning should be done to remove contaminants from the floor before sanding.
  2. Sand floors using accepted NWFA/MFMA procedures. All old finish must be removed. A NIOSH approved dust mask should be worn during sanding.
  3. Finish sanding with a new 120-grit screen. DO NOT USE STEEL WOOL.
  4. Vacuum. Tack with a clean, dry Basic Coatings’ Microfiber Mop until all dust has been removed.

Sealer Application

Always maintain adequate ventilation during all phases of the coating and drying process.

  1. Measure moisture content of floor in several areas.
  2. Shake and rock container several times. Use a stir stick to redisperse any settlement.
  3. Set aside for approximately 10 minutes to allow bubbles to break.
  4. Rinse refill applicator and remove all excess water. This also helps to remove loose fibers.
  5. Apply Lock ‘N Seal™ using standard waterbased application procedures.
  6. Allow each coat a minimum of 30-45 minutes to level.
  7. After sealer levels, place fans in an adjacent area to pull moisture away from the job site. When each coat has dried a minimum of 2-3 hours (under good conditions), re-measure moisture content. If moisture content is not equal to the first reading, allow more dry time. Repeat for each coat.
  8. If necessary, abrade between coats to remove debris, hair, drips, etc. or if the 24-hour window between coats has elapsed. Abrade with the pad-and-strip system using 180-240 grit sanding strips. Between coats, vacuum and tack with a Basic Coatings Microfiber Mop dampened with Squeaky™.
  9. If the 24-hour window has elapsed, the TyKote® Dust-Free Refinishing System is an to alternative screening the floor. Refer to TyKote application procedures for details.
  10. Apply second coat in the same manner if desired

Painting Game Lines

Apply any painted game lines after screening and cleaning the second coat of sealer. Refer to gymnasium technical literature for acceptable paints and painting procedures.

Dry Time

Allow at least 2-3 hours between coats and 1 hour of good ventilation before closing job site.
