Since the beginning of operations in 1982, Baymag has been committed to strict quality control of its products and processes. From raw magnesite mining through to calcined MgO production and shipping, the product is tested in accordance with stringent guidelines to ensure conformance to specified requirements. An individual Quality Certificate is issued for each and every shipment to verify product quality. This commitment to quality was strengthened in 1995 with the initial registration to the ISO 9002 quality system standard. Currently, Baymag maintains registration to the updated ISO 9001 quality management system standard, which sets guidelines for quality throughout the company as a whole. Baymag’s focus for the future remains the continuous improvement of all processes and operations within the company, to ensure the production of high quality magnesium oxide products for the customer.
Applications & Uses
- Markets
- Industrial Applications
Magnesium oxide products for a wide range of industrial applications. These products are specifically designed to meet the needs of the intended processes or end use. Consistent high-purity, controlled reactivity, and product uniformity are an integral part of product design and production.
Common uses of magnesium oxide products in industrial applications include:
Pulp and Paper Production of magnesium bisulphite pulping liquors. Magnesium Compounds A source of magnesium for the production of magnesium salts such as sulfates (Epsom salts), nitrates, acetates, chlorides, etc. Also used in the production of magnesium metal and alloys. Building Compounds & Specialty Cements Magnesium oxide is a component in magnesia-based cements, including oxychloride, oxysulfate and phosphate based cements. These cements are typically used in the production of fireproof materials and coatings, wallboards, flooring and grinding wheels. Steel and Nickel Refining Slag conditioner for protection of Mag-Carbon refractories. Fiberglass A source of magnesium in the feedstock for the production of fiberglass. Miscellaneous Industrial Processes Magnesium oxide is used in various industrial processes as a pH modifier and precipitant. It also has a myriad of applications as a filler, desiccant, absorbent and flocculent. - Environmental Applications
Magnesium oxide has various applications in waste and wastewater treatment. It is an effective base, offering a safe method of pH modification in comparison to other neutralizing agents such as lime or caustic soda. It can be utilized as a magnesium oxide powder or granule, or converted to a magnesium hydroxide slurry for additional uses in waste water treatment.
Water Treatment Adsorption and precipitation of silica and heavy metals as an integral part of industrial water treatment systems. Helps prevent scale formation in boilers, heat exchangers, and piping. Soil Remediation An excellent pH modifier and heavy metal scavenger in contaminated soils. Effectively precipitates heavy metals, thus preventing subsequent leaching from treated soils. Waste Water Neutralization Offers a safe and effective replacement to caustic soda and lime for the neutralization of acidic waste streams. Offers excellent buffering capacity to a maximum pH of 9 and prevents high pH spikes, which can adversely affect biological treatment systems. Solids Settling Offers an added benefit of increased solids settling and reduction of sludge volumes due to coagulation effect. Heavy Metals Removal Effective removal of heavy metals from industrial waste streams through precipitation as metal hydroxides. Results in reduced sludge volumes and buffered pH values. Flue Gas Desulphurization Wet flue gas scrubbing for sulfur dioxide removal. - Agricultural Applications
Animal Feed and Health
Plant forage and animal feeds are often deficient in the required magnesium levels for healthy animal nutrition. A supplemental source of magnesium is required to maintain healthy levels within a ruminant’s diet. Baymag MgO offers a high concentration of magnesium as well as excellent biological availability.
Magnesium deficiency in cattle and sheep can lead to a condition called grass tetany. This condition is more common in the spring and fall when levels of magnesium in the natural forage are not adequate to maintain healthy levels within the animal. Feed supplements and mineral premixes are commonly used to provide the necessary levels of magnesium to the animals to prevent grass tetany. MgO is the most widely used source of magnesium for these applications.
MgO is also an important source of magnesium for rumen buffers and dairy supplements. It offers an available source of magnesium, which aids in increasing lactational performance.
Animal Feed Blocks
MgO is commonly used as both a setting agent and source of available magnesium in the production of mineral and molasses feed blocks. Baymag produces specific MgO products, which provide the desired sizing and reactivity for this application as well as maintaining a high magnesium content.
Fertilizer Applications
MgO is commonly used as a supplement for magnesium deficient soils especially for crops such as citrus, potatoes, vegetables, fruits and grass pastures. Baymag produces several grades of MgO for direct application, or as component to various fertilizer formulations.
Sugar Refining
Specific grades of MgO are offered for the sugar refining industry for the neutralization of raw cane and sugar beet juices. This also aids in the reduction of evaporator scaling.
