- Product Background
Cattle consuming moldy feed is not ideal or recommended, but sometimes, it occurs. Weather conditions during the growing or harvesting season or conditions during storage can cause mold growth. Moldy feed by itself may decrease the digestibility of the ration, make the feed less palatable and lower the intake of energy, dry matter and nutrients. This may reduce milk production, growth, and resistance to metabolic and infectious diseases.
For some categories of animals, feeding moldy feed is nearly always too risky. This includes horses, and may include pregnant or lactating cows. Producers must be able to judge whether the mold contamination is too high to risk feeding. This typically can be assessed by periodic toxin testing of feed samples.
If you do use feed with mold, consider feeding Kuro FX™ with the feed. Kuro FX™ is a supplement for cattle during nutritional challenges, and especially for circumstances in which moldy feeds are consumed. The recommended feeding rate is one to two ounces per animal. Generally speaking, one ounce is recommended as a maintenance rate, and two ounces are recommended for a heavier mold contamination.
