The tree bears white to pale-yellow flowers emerging in clusters along the branches. The fruit may be round, ovoid, or elliptic with rough, dark-brown skin, salmon-pink to deep-red soft flesh, enclosing 1 to 4 large seeds which are hard, glossy-brown with a large kernel. From the kernel an off white to clear gold in color, semi-solid, vaseline-like oil is extracted which is edible when freshly extracted. It contains predominantly non-saturated fatty acids, a deep fragrant pleasant cherry-almond like scent, rich in vitamins A, B, C and E, proteins, amino acids, fatty acids and minerals.
Mamey Sapote oil, reassessed beyond artisanal applications, has been analyzed in greater detail as a source of triterpene alcohols commonly considered to be effective in skin care to improve tolerance to UV radiation. Sapote oil has been discovered by the cosmetic industry and used to combat free radicals due to its inflammatory properties, as well as pharmacology as an anti-inflammatory.
Sapote oil is largely used as a skin ointment, in soap manufacturing for skin disorders and it is employed as a sedative in eye and ear ailments.
It’s also an effective natural topical remedy to control hair loss – a fact confirmed by tests at the University of California at Los Angeles - showing that the sapote oil, or mamey oil seed is effective in stopping hair-fall caused by seborrheic dermatitis.
