Additional Information
Thanks to its oleic and linoleic acids content, neem oil has nourishing and soothing properties. Antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral activity The antibacterial activity of neem against Streptococcus mutans and S. Faecalis (1999) has been proven. It has also been observed that the oil from its leaves, seeds and bark is effective against gram-negative microorganisms, gram-positive microorganisms including M. Tuberculosis, and streptomycin-resistant varieties. It has also been reported the fact that in vitro it inhibits Vibrio cholerae, Klebsiella pneumoniae, M. tuberculosis and M. pyogenes. Insect repellent activity Azadirachtin is toxic against Rhodnius prolixus (hematophagous insect), it inhibits feeding on Schistocerca gregaria and affects more than 200 species of insects, interrupting their growth and hampering their feeding. This also grants it a certain level of toxicity against them. Contrarily, it has a very low toxicity level in mammals and it is biodegradable. The most active compounds are known to be azadirachtin A, azadirachtin B and salanin, and thus the aqueous extract provides appropriate amounts of active compounds to work as an insect repellent. Therefore, Neem is highly recommended for cosmetic products with insect repellent activity.
