ColoDan Feed is produces at a gentle drying process so the bioactive substances in the colostrum maintain intact. No fat has been removed and no immunoglobulins have been added and no other changes has been made. ColoDan Feed is a complementary feed for calves made of dried colostrum from Danish IBR-free dairy herds and contain 99% colsotrum. ColoDan Feed is a powder that has undergone a gentle drying process s0 that the bioactive substances of the colostrum have been maintained. No fat has been removed, no immune substances added, nor are any other alterations made.

Features

The calf's need for colostrum

  • Colostrum is the first milk, which the cow produces within the first 1-2 days after calving. Colostrum has a high content of nutrients, immuno substances, growth factors and other bioactive substances that support the newborn calf's growth and the development of the immune system, so the calf is protected against infections within the first weeks of life.
  • It is vital for the calf to receive colostrum as soon as possible after birth, to secure adequate immunization.
  • No antibodies are transferred into the blood from the mother cow before birth. The calf is born without any king of immunological protection and the calf's ablity to absorb the immune substances disapears almost completely during the first 24 hours.
  • A calf must consume minimum 4 l of colostrum (large breeds) and minimum 3 l (jersey) to achieve serum levels of immunoglobulin G (IgG) af 10 mg/ml, which ensures adequate immunity.

Time is a crucial factor

  • Just after birth, the calf's intestinal cells are by nature permeable to absorb large molecules, such as antibodies by passive transport. After approximately 24-36 hours, the intestine closes and the intestinal cell no longer allow large molecules to pass through. Therefore, it is important that the calf drinks sufficient colostrum as soon as possible and preferably within 6 hours after birth, to achieve immunological protection. It is essential for maturation of the immune system of the calf and helps protect it against diseases.
  • Colostrum is generated in the period prior to calving and ends after calving where the cow begins to produce milk. This means that a dilution of the colostrum starts just after calving. Therefore, it is important that the calf receives colostrum form the first milking as soon as possible after calving.
  • Achieve adequate immunity
    • Give a calf of large breed minimum 4 liters of colostrum.
    • Alternatively 1000 g ColoDan Feed in 3 liters of water. Give a Jersey calf minimum 3 liters of colostrum.
    • Alternatively, 1000 g ColoDan Feed in 3 liters of water Check that the IgG of the blood serum is minimum 10 gl.

Colostrum quality

  • Colostrum quality is important to ensure sufficient immunization and can be measured with a refractometer (minimum 22 % Brix).
  • Many different factors influence the quality of the colostrum, such as lactation number, length of dry period, diseases during the dry period and at calving time as well as the cow leaking milk during the dry period.

Colodan Feed as replecement

Colodan can me used as a replacement in situations where there is a lack of colostrum or if there is health issues in the herd, that make it impossible to use the cow's colostrum for the calf.

  • Dosage
    • First day: Mix 1.000 g ColoDan Feed into 3 liters of warm water (max. 50°C). To be administred as soon as possible and within 6 hours after birth.
    • Second day: Mix 500 g ColoDan Feed into 1,5 liters of warm water (max 50°C), supplemented with 3-4 liters of whole milk or milkreplacer.

Be aware that the water must not be warmer than 50o C, as important components can be damaged by excessive heat.

ColoDan Feed as supplement

ColoDan Feed can be used as a supplement for the cows colostrum,if the quality is to poor or if sufficient amount is not available.
The dosage depend on the quality of the cows colostrum. The quality can be measured with a refractometer. A good quality has a value of at least 22. If the quality is lower we recommend to supplement with ColoDan Feed.

First day: Mix 1000 g ColoDan Feed with 3 of warm water (max. 50°C). To be administered as soon as possible and within 6 hours after birth.

Second day

  • First feeding: Mix 500 g ColoDan Feed with 1.5I of warm water (max. 50 °C).
  • Second feeding: 3-4 I of 1BR-free whole milk or milk replacer.
  • Feeding temperature 37-40°C.

Exapmle of supplement with ColoDan Feed:

  • The quality is 18 Brix.
  • We want to give 4 liters of colostrum to the newborn calf.
  • A total of 560 g of ColoDan Feed in 4 liters is needed.
  • The feeding temperature should be 37-40°C.

Important to remember

  • Do not mix ColoDan Feed with water with a temperature higher than 50 °C, as important components can be damaged by a too high temperature.
  • Ifthere is a risk of infection with 1BR, the calf must not receive cow's milk the first 2 days after birth.
  • When ColoDan Feed is aministered on the second day, a local protection against infection in the small intestine is achieved.
Colostrum quality

The quality of the colostrum is important to ensure adequate immunization. The quality can be measured with a refractometer (min, 22% Brix).

Factors influencing the colostrum quality

  • Time from calving to first milking
  • Lactation number
  • Length of dry period
  • Feeding during the dry period
  • Diseases during the dry period and around calving
  • Milk leakage during the dry period
